Canon reports slightly higher profits in Q1, teases new compact cameras on the way

Canon reported its Q1 2012 earnings this week, and things certainly appear to have gone better than the last time we checked in when it replaced the company president. While revenue declined slightly, net profit reached 61.54 billion yen ($766 million), up 11 percent from a year ago. There's no executive moves to report, however on the earnings call executive VP and CFO Toshizo Tanaka noted a unit sales increase of 30 percent for SLR cameras including the new EOS 5D Mark III as well as the cheaper T3i, Mark II and 60D models, combined with strong sales for WiFi-connected point-and-shoots. As far as new products, while its new cinema cameras got a glancing mention the plan this year includes compact cameras "offering the image qualities that approaches SLR cameras", with improved design and network connectivity features. All the numbers and earnings call talk are in black and white at the links below, although we prefer to spend our time speculating about the future of mirrorless cameras.

Believe It Or Not: Justin Bieber Unveils Album Cover!

Pop star tweets standard and deluxe album covers for June 19 release, cryptically telling fans, 'expect the unexpected.'
By Katie Byrne

<P><P>Judging by the cover art for <a href="/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a>'s <i>Believe</i> album, the 18-year-old pop star is well aware of one of his best assets: his boyish good looks. The cover, which Bieber <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/justinbieber/status/196005439043928065" target="_blank">tweeted</a> on Friday evening (April 27), is simply a black-and-white close-up of his face with the word "BELIEVE" stamped in a yellow caution-tape font underneath. </P><P> </P><P>"Here is the #BELIEVEalbumCover standard version," he tweeted, <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/justinbieber/status/196006318425915392" target="_blank">followed</a> by a second tweet that included a sepia-toned version of the same image: "and this is the DELUXE #BELIEVEalbumCover - #52DAYS - excited? expect the unexpected." </P><P> </P><P><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:754722/cp~vid%3D754722%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A754722" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed> </P><P> </P><P>After posting the <i>Believe</i> album cover on Friday, Bieber <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/julieannxoxo/status/196007330838626305" target="_blank">retweeted</a> one fan's over-the-top reaction to the artwork: "That awkward moment when I almost ran over a lady and hit the car in front of me cuz I saw the #BELIEVEAlbumCover lololol," @julieannxoxo wrote. </P><P> </P><P><a href="/news/articles/1683335/justin-bieber-believe-the-voice.jhtml">Bieber just revealed the June 19 <i>Believe</i> release date</a> last week on "The Voice," also bringing along a teaser from his yet-unreleased "Boyfriend" video. LG Optimus True HD LTE's European assault begins in Portugal, Germany and Sweden

Image

While the latest LTE and HD equipped addition to LG's Optimus line has already landed across Asia (Korea, Japan) and North America (US - AT&T, US - Verizon, Canada) under a few different names, the newly rebranded Optimus True HD LTE is finally prepared for a European debut. As seen by the flags flying above, this week LG will begin rolling out to Portugal, Germany and Sweden, with Britain and France on deck for the second half of the year when LTE service is available. The other flags present represent further Asian rollouts in Hong Kong and Singapore. The plan, described in the Korean press release linked below (Update: English PR after the break), is apparently to make LG synonymous with LTE, although we can't see how renaming its current dual-core standard bearer every other week is helping.

Ask AC: HTC One S voice mail notification issue

HTC One S

Ingram1225 asks in the HTC One S forums,

Anyone have voice mail notification issues? Like always saying you have voice mail? Seems to be a rampant HTC issue with all their phones.

I did listen to all my voicemails... even deleted the saved ones. My One S keeps notifying me that I have a new voicemail... and when I check there are no new voicemails.

As Ingram1225 mentioned, this is a quirk on a lot of HTC Android phones, and not particular to the One S. When you activate or put your SIM in a new HTC Sense phone, sometimes you get a voice mail notification. It happens seemingly at random, and nobody is 100-percent sure how to prevent it. Good thing it's easy to fix!

Grab another phone, it could be a landline, another cell phone, or even a call from Google Talk, and call your number. Don't answer it, you need to let it go to voicemail. When it does, leave a message. Now go back to your phone with the stuck voice mail notification. You should now have two voice mails showing, the "stuck" one and the real one you just left. Call your voice mail service from your HTC Sense phone, and listen to and delete the new message. That should fix your problem, and you're good to go until you get another new HTC phone.
