In the fall of 2009 a group of biology students at Tufts University sat down together and ate some dirt. They ground up small clay tablets and swallowed the powder to find out, firsthand, what clay tastes like. This unusual taste test was part of a Darwinian medicine class taught by one of us (Starks). The students were studying the evolution of geophagia?the practice of eating dirt, especially claylike soils, which is something animals and people have been doing for millennia.

The standard reference guide for psychiatrists?the fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (DSM-IV)?classifies geophagia as a subtype of pica, an eating disorder in which people consume things that are not food, such as cigarette ash and paint chips. But as the students would learn, studies of animals and human cultures suggest that geophagia is not necessarily abnormal?in fact, it may well be adaptive. Researchers are taking another look at dirt eating and discovering that the behavior often provides people and animals with vital minerals and inactivates toxins from food and the environment.

EVOLUTIONARY APPROACH
One way to decide whether geophagia is abnormal or adaptive is to determine how common the behavior is in animals and across human societies. If many different species and cultures demonstrate the same behavior, then it is probably beneficial in some way.

Today it is clear that geophagia is even more widespread in the animal kingdom than previously thought. Investigators have observed geophagia in more than 200 species of animals, including parrots, deer, elephants, bats, rabbits, baboons, gorillas and chimpanzees. Geophagia is also well documented in humans, with records dating to at least the time of Greek physician Hippocrates (460 B.C.). The Mesopotamians and ancient Egyptians used clay medicinally: they plastered wounds with mud and ate dirt to treat various ailments, especially of the gut. Some indigenous peoples in the Americas used dirt as a spice and prepared naturally bitter foods such as acorns and potatoes with a little clay to counteract the acerbic taste. Geophagia was a frequent practice in Europe until the 19th century, and some societies, such as the Tiv tribe of Nigeria, still rely on cravings for dirt as a sign of pregnancy.

A common explanation for why animals and people eat dirt is that soil contains minerals, such as calcium, sodium and iron, which support energy production and other vital biological processes. The fact that an animal?s need for these minerals changes with the seasons, with age and with overall health may explain why geophagia is especially common when an animal?s diet does not provide enough minerals or when the challenges of the environment demand extra energy. Mountain gorillas and African buffalo that live at high altitudes may, for example, ingest earth as a source of iron that promotes red blood cell development. Elephants, gorillas and bats eat sodium-rich clays when they do not get enough sodium in their diet. One elephant population is known to continually visit underground caves where the animals dig up and eat salt-enriched rock.

Among human populations in Africa, those who have ready access to calcium do not practice geophagia as often as those deprived of calcium. The need for calcium may also partly explain why geophagia is most commonly associated with pregnancy: a mother needs extra calcium as the fetal skeleton develops.

Mineral acquisition does not fully explain geophagia, though. In an extensive review paper published in the 2011 Quarterly Review of Biology, Sera L. Young of Cornell University and her colleagues conclude that eating earth rarely adds significant amounts of minerals to one?s diet and, in many cases, interferes with the absorption of digested food from the gut into the bloodstream, sometimes resulting in nutrient deficiency.

Somalia, African Union forces attack Islamist-held camp

The effort is to push the Islamist militia Al Shabab further away from the outskirts of Somalia's capital, Mogadishu, but aid workers worry that displaced civilians in Afgoye camp may get caught in crossfire.

A major offensive aimed at clearing Somalia?s Al Qaeda-allied?Islamist?army from the world?s largest camp for displaced people began Tuesday, amid fears that civilians could end up in the firing line.?

Columns of Somali National Army troops with African Union peacekeepers launched the attack soon after sunrise along a major road heading northwest from Mogadishu, the Somali capital.??

Their aim, the AU?s most senior official in Somalia said, was to ?build security? so that the 400,000 people squatting on?Islamist-controlled territory outside the city would find it easier to be reached by aid agencies.?The area, known as the?Afgoye?corridor, remains under the rule of Al Shabab, a radicalized fighting force bent on routing Somalia?s Western-backed government and ruling the country according to a strict interpretation of Islamic law.

Al Shabab has banned most international aid groups from working in its territory, despite the ongoing effects of last year?s famine and threats of further severe hunger after failed crops this year.?

?The?Afgoye?corridor holds one of the biggest concentrations of internally displaced people in the world,? said?Wafula?Wamunyinyi, who heads the AU peacekeeping mission in Somalia, known as?AMISOM.??We are helping them by building security so that they can share in the economic revival of the capital. They will now be able to access humanitarian services and eventually return to their original homes in Mogadishu.??

Mogadishu has seen its longest period of peace in many years recently, since the AU contingent ? made up mostly of Ugandan and Burundian soldiers ? forced Al Shabab from the capital last year.?Where once there were daily mortar and small-arms battles along?frontlines?running down the city?s main streets, now it is rare to hear sustained gunfire.?

Businesses are starting, markets are flourishing, and schools and clinics are reopening.?

But there are still regular suicide attacks by bombers sent by Al Shabab, including one last month at the newly reopened Somali National Theater, which killed 10 people.?

Many of those attackers are believed to come from the area around?Afgoye, and AU commanders hope that Tuesday?s offensive, which is likely to last several days, will force them further from Mogadishu?s outskirts.?But there were concerns that fighting in such a crowded area could lead to ordinary people being caught up in the conflict, or?Islamist?fighters melting into the population.?

One aid worker in Nairobi, capital of neighboring Kenya, warned, however, that taking the battle to?Al Shabab where there were so many civilians living in flimsy shelters was a substantial risk.?

?It could be truly dreadful if Shabab pull back into the [internally displaced people?s] camps and start launching their fightback from there,? she said, refusing to give her name or organization because she was not authorized to talk to the media.??It?s true that we need to reach those people, it?s a desperate situation there. But it will be a disaster if people we need to treat for malnutrition suddenly really need treating for gunshots, mortar wounds, or other battlefield injuries.??

Lt. Gen. Andrew?Gutti,?AMISOM?s force commander, said that the attack had been ?designed to?minimize?the harm to the population.??

?During this joint operation?AMISOM?is taking every precaution to prevent harm or injury to civilians,? he said.??We will only fight when attacked by the Al Shabab terrorists. We ask the population of the?Afgoye corridor to continue to stay in their places of residence, avoid unnecessary travel on main roads, and not to stray far from their homes.??

Abdisamad?Moalim?Mohamoud, Somalia?s interior minister, said late Tuesday that government forces had made ?a great achievement? during the first day of the offensive, taking the towns of?Garasbaley and?Daynile?from?Al Shabab.?

But Islamist commander?Sheikh?Fuad?Mohamed?Khalaf?told Mogadishu?s Radio Al?Andalus?that ?the crusade forces from Burundi and Uganda and their Somali puppets launched an offensive, they were pushed back, they were given a lesson enough.??

?They left bodies and destroyed military trucks, we will show them to the media later today,? he added.?

Eyewitnesses, however, said that they had seen at least five dead?Al Shabab fighters, and one casualty from the government forces.?

?Al Shabab was pushed back, they lost a good distance to the government forces, I saw five of their bodies, the government forces were kicking them,? said Osman?Hilibi, who lives close to?Garasbaley.?

State Roundup: Health Law Could Create Calif. Jobs; What's Driving ...

A selection of health policy stories from Massachusetts, Georgia, California, Texas, Oregon, Maryland and Minnesota.

Politico Pro:?Gruber: Mass. Not Sure What's Driving Costs
As Massachusetts wrestles with ambitious legislation to contain health care costs, MIT economist Jonathan Gruber?raises one major problem: The state has no idea what's driving the growth in health care costs. In fact, it's not even close to figuring it out,?Gruber?says. "We don't know the answer, we don't know how to fix it now," said?Gruber, who helped design the state's 2006 health reform and the national law.?"We have to experiment and be more patient" (Millman, 5/21).

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Lax Enforcement In Personal Care Homes
Deficiencies in care, living conditions and record-keeping have piled up in scores of Georgia personal care homes, with the state rarely shutting down violators or levying heavy fines, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has found. An analysis of five years worth of inspections, violations and enforcement actions revealed that many frequent violators have faced nothing more than a fine of a few hundred dollars. ... About half of the state's 2,000 licensed personal care homes are in metro Atlanta, and they provide more than 12,000 beds for some of the region's most fragile residents ? those who are disabled, elderly or mentally ill (Schneider and Simmons, 5/22).

Market Watch: Health Reform To Create California Jobs: Study
Health care reform will create nearly 99,000 jobs in California, according to a study released Monday. The Bay Area Council Economic Institute's report said a ripple effect will result from the $4.4 billion that will come to the state's economy via the 2010 Affordable Care Act in coming years (Britt, 5/21).

Houston Chronicle: School Programs Lead Fight Against Childhood Obesity
Inside E.A. Jones Elementary School, the battle against childhood obesity is being fought with fresh?ingredients. ? The classes are one component of Activate for Kids, a health and fitness pilot program developed by?UnitedHealthcare?and the United Health Foundation. The program, which kicked off this year in six school districts in Texas, Florida and Georgia, is among a growing number using a more holistic approach to tackle the childhood obesity?epidemic (Rhor, 5/21).

Boston Globe: Harvard Pilgrim Expands Health Coverage
Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, expanding a seven-year-old partnership with United HealthCare Services Inc., will use the national health insurer?s network to offer Harvard Pilgrim health coverage to employers with offices outside Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine. Under the joint program, called Access America, multistate businesses based in the three New England states where Harvard Pilgrim does business will be able to offer their workers at plants, sales offices, or satellite sites across the country the same Harvard Pilgrim insurance products that employees in their home offices receive (Weisman, 5/22).

Statesmen Journal?(Oregon): Quick Medical Care Given Free To State Workers
Any state worker feeling poorly in the Salem area now has quick access to a free medical consultation via secure video conferencing, under a new program by Providence Health & Services. Providence Health eXpress is an innovative attempt to reduce health care costs by providing quick treatment in the workplace for routine ailments, Providence spokeswoman Patti Atkins said. ? The service is available to all state workers enrolled in a Public Employees? Benefit Board health insurance plan, even folks who are signed up with Kaiser Permanente. It?s a joint program being offered by PEBB and Providence (Thompson, 5/21).

The Baltimore Sun: Health Care Spending Rising In Maryland
Marylanders spent $44.5 billion on personal health care in 2010 as costs in the state continued to outpace the nation, according to a new report. Spending on services including hospital care, prescription drugs and long-term care increased 3.5 percent compared to 2009, according to the report by The Maryland Health Care Commission. On average a Maryland resident spent $7,698 on health care in 2010, 9 percent higher than the national average of $7,066 (Walker, 5/21).

McClatchy/The Sacramento Bee: California Sees Sharp Rise In Million-Dollar Hospital Bills
The number of Northern California hospital stays resulting in charges of $1 million or more rose sevenfold in the past decade, from 430 in 2000 to almost 3,000 during 2010, according to a Bee review of new data from the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development. Most of those bills will be lowered significantly -- up to 80 percent -- following negotiations between hospitals and insurers. Even then, they will usually still cost more than a typical Sacramento home.

Minnesota Public Radio: Hospital Support Workers Vote On New Labor Contract
Health care workers will vote today and Wednesday on a new labor contract with eight metro-area hospitals. Union leaders representing about 3,500 nursing assistants, food service workers, clerks and maintenance and warehouse staff reached a tentative agreement with the hospitals last week (Benson, 5/22).

Georgia Health News: Pickens Vs. Murray: A Tale Of Two Counties
Murray and Pickens comprise one of five pairs of neighboring counties with markedly different health profiles, based on both Partner Up and University of Wisconsin data.? The other pairs are Pike and Upson, Glynn and Wayne, Lee and Terrell, and Houston and Twiggs. With the other four pairs, however, the reasons for the differences in health status are more obvious. ? In each of the other pairs of counties, big enough differences in demographics would explain the health disparities. For Pickens and Murray, it?s not as clear cut (Toledo, 5/12).

The Note's Must-Reads for Tuesday, May 22, 2012

The Note's Must-Reads are a round-up of today's political headlines and stories from ABC News and the top U.S. newspapers. Posted Monday through Friday right here at www.abcnews.com

Compiled by ABC News' Amanda VanAllen, Carrie Halperin and Ben Waldron

OBAMA/ROMNEY ABC News' Jake Tapper and Mary Bruce: " President Obama Directly Seeks to Make Romney's Business Experience the 'Bain' of His Existence" At the close of the NATO Summit, taking questions from reporters, President Obama launched his most direct attack yet at challenger Mitt Romney, defending his campaign's attacks on Romney's tenure at Bain Capital and full-throatedly saying "this is what this campaign is going to be about.""If your main argument for how to grow the economy is 'I knew how to make a lot of money for investors' than you're missing what this job is about," the president said.? LINK

The Washington Post's Jon Cohen and Dan Balz: " Poll: Obama, Romney in dead heat" After months of aggressive campaigning on jobs and the economy, President Obama and Mitt Romney, his likely Republican challenger, are locked in a dead heat over who could fix the problem foremost on voters' minds, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll. The parity on economic issues foreshadows what probably will continue to be a tough and negative campaign. LINK

USA Today's ?Aamer Madhani, and Richard Wolf: " As NATO summit wraps, Obama and Romney trade attacks"?President Obama and Mitt Romney took direct aim at each other on Monday, with Romney charging that Obama has failed to accept moral responsiblity for his policies and the president defending his re-election campaign's focus on the private-equity firm once headed by the former Massachusetts governor. Obama's sharp critique came after Romney aides and Republican operatives spent Monday peppering the president's re-election campaign. LINK

The New York Daily News' Alison Gendar and Thomas M. Defrank: " Obama attacks Romney's business background: good for running a company, bad for a country" President Obama went directly at Mitt Romney's jugular Monday, arguing that his Republican challenger's business pedigree may turn around a company but isn't enough to run a country. Obama dissed what he called Romney's "main calling card," arguing a President must consider a bigger picture than merely the bottom line for wealthy investors. LINK

The NY Times' Nicholas Confessore, Jo Craven and Derek Willis: " Fund-Raising for Romney Eats Into Obama's Edge."President Obama's once-commanding fund-raising advantage is declining as major Republican donors rally for Mitt Romney, conservative "super PACs" far outpace their liberal counterparts and tax-exempt issue-advocacy groups swarm the political landscape. With Republican Congressional committees largely keeping pace with the Democrats, Mr. Obama and his Democratic allies appear increasingly likely to be matched or even outspent by Republican and conservative groups - a far cry from 2008, when Mr. Obama outspent Senator John McCain by more than two to one and super PACs did not exist. LINK

PRESIDENT OBAMA Bloomberg's Whitney King and Inyoung Hwang: " Worst Market Since Reagan Greets Obama Before Election" With only six months before the election, the stock market is giving President Barack Obama the worst returns since Ronald Reagan was seeking a second term.? The Standard & Poor's 500 Index (SPX) is up 1.3 percent since Mitt Romney's campaign began 12 months ago, compared with average gains of 12 percent for incumbents who won re-election starting with Harry S. Truman, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. LINK

The Boston Globe's Callum Borchers: " Obama defends Bain-themed attacks against Romney" President Obama Monday vigorously defended his reelection campaign's attacks on Mitt Romney's business record, saying the principles of private equity do not apply to the presidency. "If your main argument for how to grow the economy is, 'I knew how to make a lot of money for investors,' then you're missing what this job is about," Obama said. "My job is to take into account everybody, not just some." LINK

The Hill's Jeremy Herb and Amie Parnes: " President: Bain jabs fair game" President Obama on Monday defended his reelection campaign's aggressive attacks on Mitt Romney's private-equity background, which he described as a central issue in the campaign.? The reason this is relevant to the campaign is my opponent, Gov. Romney, his main calling card for why he should be president is his business experience," Obama said at a press conference after the conclusion of the NATO summit in Chicago.? LINK

The Los Angeles Times' Kathleen B. Hennessey: " Obama makes commencement speech in Joplin, Mo." President Obama held up storm-ravaged Joplin, Mo., as a model for the power of cooperation in a commencement speech Monday night that hit on some of the themes of his campaign.? LINK

The Washington Times' Paige Winfield Cunningham: " Catholic leaders take aim at Obama contraception plan" Catholic Church leaders escalated their fight Monday against President Obama's health care plan, as dozens of the U.S. church's biggest archdioceses, universities and other institutions filed a torrent of lawsuits demanding the law's contraception mandate be struck down as violating constitutional protections of religious liberty. LINK

Politico's Glen Thrush and Maggie Haberman: " Obama's Bain Capital mutiny" President Barack Obama flew into Chicago grimly set on ending the war in Afghanistan - and left his hometown by gleefully starting a new one over Bain Capital with Mitt Romney.? If Obama had any reticence about diving into an election-year controversy at an otherwise deeply sober gathering of world leaders bent on ending 10 years of conflict, he wasn't showing it Monday when asked about the escalating controversy over Romney's stewardship of his highly profitable private equity firm. Courts under fire in mental health row | Health and Fitness

Illustration: Matt Golding

MENTAL illnesses are being exploited by some defence lawyers to reduce sentences for people found guilty of serious offences, despite a lack of evidence linking the ailments to criminal behaviour, mental health experts say.

Groups including the Mental Health Council of Australia and beyondblue have urged more rigorous psychological examinations of people charged with crimes when mental illness is claimed in mitigation. They say those with mental health problems are more likely to be victims of crime than perpetrators.

Several prosecutors from the Office of Public Prosecutions also told The Sunday Age they were frustrated that depression had become a ?pro forma defence tactic? used to seek leniency.

One senior prosecutor said defence lawyers were exploiting a Victorian Court of Appeal decision in 2007 that reduced the moral culpability, but not legal responsibility, of those diagnosed with mental disorders.

Mental Health Council of Australia chief executive Frank Quinlan said there were doubts about the diagnosis of some mental illnesses. Distinctions between normal sadness and clinical depression were still widely debated in the mental health profession, he said.

?It seems to me, that on the back of the very poor evidence we have, there is no prima facie case of a link between crime and mental illness.?

Mr Quinlan was critical of a recent attempt by a defence lawyer to seek leniency for a client with depression, after the man was found guilty of downloading child pornography.

?Some people who suffer severe psychotic conditions may have an argument about not being able to form intent, but those suffering high-prevalence mood disorders such as acute anxiety and depression have an inability to find motivation and plan, which would obviously impact their ability to commit a crime,? he said.

His claims are at odds with a Corrections Victoria report that found almost half of adults in custody had a history of mental illness and 34 per cent of children in detention centres had psychological disorders. Beyondblue estimates major mental illnesses are up to five times more prevalent among prisoners than in the general community.

Law Institute of Victoria president Michael Holcroft said there was a correlation between mental disorders and a range of criminal behaviour. It was ?totally appropriate? for a lawyer to raise mental health when entering a pre-sentencing plea, Mr Holcroft said.

?People under the influence of drugs and alcohol or suffering from mental health episodes are far more likely to get themselves into trouble than the standard person in the street. And to avoid re-offending, the courts need to address the underlying source of the problem.?

He said lawyers relied on expert medical opinion and had a responsibility not to mislead the courts.

?To say there is no link between crime and mental health is extraordinary. People come before the courts with myriad issues,? Mr Holcroft said.

In 2010, the Magistrates Court set up a specialist court and program to provide extra support for the rising number of accused people claiming to have depression and other mental disorders. At the time, magistrate John Lesser said more than a third of those who appeared before Victorian courts had some form of mental illness.

But Superintendent Spiros Kalliakmanis, of the police prosecutions division, raised concerns about the growing number of cases diverted to the specialist court. ?It is a matter for the court to determine the legitimacy of a plea. However, any abuse of these jurisdictions and services has an impact on the ability to offer quality services to members of the community who are in real need,? he said.

Beyondblue chief Kate Carnell said depression had no bearing on a person?s propensity to commit a crime.

?The reality of mental health issues is people don?t do things that they wouldn?t otherwise do or behave dramatically out of character. Magistrates should listen to the mental health experts and make sure that the information that is being presented in court is evidence based,? she said.

Kristen Hilton, director of civil justice at Victoria Legal Aid, said about 20 per cent of its clients had mental health problems. ?The research and our practical experience shows that someone with a mental health issue is far more likely to come into contact with the criminal justice system.

?I would hope there?s a general community consensus that someone?s mental condition should be taken into account during sentencing,? she said.

A spokesman for Attorney-General Robert Clark said genuine mental illness was relevant in sentencing. ?But claims of mental illness should not be used as an excuse to avoid responsibility for culpable conduct.?

A collaboration between Lehigh University physicists and University of Miami biologists addresses an important fundamental question in basic cell biology: How do living cells figure out when and where to grow?

The teams of Assistant Professor Dimitrios Vavylonis and Associate Professor Fulvia Verde discovered that protein Cdc42 oscillates throughout yeast cells, precipitating a ballet of proteins that change its polarity. By changing polarity, Cdc42 regulates shape, structure and function in yeast cells, starting the growth process by clustering in an area of the cellular membrane. The oscillatory mechanism they found may be a general strategy among all self-organizing biological systems, not just simple yeast.

"The research is fundamental because it provides science with an important answer to how a living cell controls its growth process," said Vavylonis. "Knowing how this particular protein controls growth could in the long run affect the search for drugs to control cell growth for tissue regeneration, organ development, and explain how neurons extend in different directions."

This work indicates how Cdc42 activates bipolar growth only once a minimal cell length has been achieved. At that point, Cdc42 begins to oscillate back and forth through the cell, as the two tips compete for it. Using fluorescent markers to tag each of the many proteins involved, researchers observed the Cdc42 protein oscillate from side to side within a cell, switching sides about every five minutes. The fluctuations provide an adaptable mechanism for cells to control their size and structure in the fast-changing environment within.

The study, Oscillatory Dynamics of Cdc42 GTPase In The Control of Polarized Growth, appears today in the journal Science.

The findings demonstrate just part of the complex process of cell growth and differentiation, but mark how advanced the science of biophysics has become. Only recently has the clear imaging and monitoring of protein activity become possible at the minute sizes and shortened time scales of individual cell maturation.

"Up until now, no one has ever seen the way this protein oscillates back and forth throughout the cell," said Tyler Drake, a Lehigh graduate student and co-author of the paper. "Looking at a simple system like yeast may allow us to understand the principles behind growth in other cells."

The Lehigh team developed the mathematical model of this phenomenon by analyzing cell data collected by Maitreyi Das and Fulvia Verde at the University of Miami. Drake and Vavylonis used a Lehigh Class of 1968 Junior Faculty Fellowship and a Sigma Xi grant to visit the University, where they began to test their mathematical theory. According to the model, changes in abundance or activity of Cdc42, or of its regulators, can shift the system to more asymmetric or symmetric states. The model's conclusions were supported by biological observations of the Miami team, who genetically manipulated regulators of the protein and realized they could change cell shape and growth symmetry by adjusting Cdc42.

Vavylonis's research has for years explored the way the cellular cytoskeleton organizes and functions. In collaboration with biologists and computer scientists, his team uses physics to study, analyze, and model the physical properties of these adaptive biological materials.

The study was conducted by Vavylonis and Drake of Lehigh's Department of Physics in collaboration with Maitreyi Das, David Wiley, Peter Buchwald and Fulvia Verde of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

The study was funded by the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, a University of Miami SEEDS "You Choose" Leadership award and by a Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need Fellowship through the U.S. Department of Education.

Junior dos Santos shares his thoughts on Frank Mir, why he sings, Chael Sonnen and more

UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos stopped by on Thursday to answer your questions. He shared his thoughts on his UFC 146 opponent Frank Mir, Jon Jones, music, Chael Sonnen, and much more.

On where Mir is most dangerous, but not the most dangerous in the UFC:

His biggest threat is if he can use his jiu-jitsu to take me to me to the ground. That's his big strength. I think he's good. Maybe among the best ground games in the heavyweight division, but there are plenty others in the other division that are better.

On Mir's trash talk:

I don't really like that style. When you prefer talk rather than fighting, it's not good. I'd rather let my fighting do the talking.

On Saturday's Strikeforce grand prix fighter Josh Barnett:

He's very experienced and has a great ground game. As far as whether I want to fight him, it's not up to me. If the UFC wants to make Josh Barnett my next opponent, then so be it. I think the fight with Daniel Cormier is an exciting matchup and I'm looking forward to it.

On the possibility of fighting UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones:

No, I don't think so. Jon Jones is a cool guy. Extremely talented. If one day he wants to fight as a heavyweight, then I'm sure he'd have a fight or two before he gets a shot at the title.

Mir's last win was against Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, a good friend of dos Santos. Will that play into this fight psychologically?

I'm a positive person and a confident fighter. What happened between them is just part of the sport. It's just a natural part of our sport. In my opinion, Big Nog was winning that fight and just made a mistake. Frank Mir took advantage of that as good fighter would do. It won't impact what I do.

On sticking with "Gonna Fly Now," a.k.a. the Rocky song, as his walkout song:

For sure I'll be walking out to the rocky song. It motivates me a lot so I agree with Christian. Back story: Dana White didn't want me to come out to that song and said it's overused. I told him 'Man, my hands shake when I hear that song'. When he heard how powerful it was for me, he told me I could keep it as my walkout song.

On what he thinks of Mir's chin:

Everybody's chin is their weak spot. If you land a shot on somebody's chin, they're down. Fight over. So yeah, that's where I'm going to try to hit him. And that's where I'm going to be hitting him.

On his love of singing:

I don't need karaoke. I sing a cappella. I like singing. I sing in the shower and all the time. When we're happy people, music's just part of our day.

On his prediction for Silva/Sonnen II:

I've got to take Anderson. Sonnen-Silva I, Sonnen was caught taking performance-enhancers and Anderson had broken ribs. It wasn't a fair fight. This time he'll beat him easily.
