GOP scoffs at White House?s ?fiscal cliff? opening bid

Republican House Speaker John Boehner speaks at a Capitol Hill press conference on Thursday. (J. Scott Applewh??Bolstered by his reelection, President Barack Obama on Thursday made a detailed opening bid to Congressional Republicans for averting the so-called fiscal cliff -- the mix of tax hikes and deep spending cuts that risk plunging the economy into a new recession come 2013. Republicans flatly rejected the offer, which mostly repackaged Obama's previous budget and jobs-creation plans while looking to avoid future fights over raising the country's debt limit.

Obama's proposal, delivered by Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner to Republican House Speaker John Boehner, called for $1.6 trillion in new tax revenues over 10 years plus some $400 billion in savings in popular entitlement programs including Medicare, the government health care plan for seniors. It also included some relief for Americans hit by the home foreclosure crisis and an extension of both the payroll tax holiday and unemployment assistance.

The package also includes a roughly $50 billion jobs plan, mostly infrastructure spending.

The White House is using the blueprint to address the thorny issue of hiking the federal debt limit.

Right now, Congressional approval is required before the federal debt ceiling can be raised. Opposition to boosting the debt limit by many Republican lawmakers in 2011 brought the U.S. government close to default.?Still smarting from that debacle, the White House wants to give lawmakers the right to block a debt increase rather than vote to approve it.

The offer landed with a thud on Capitol Hill, where Republicans bluntly rejected it and expressed shock that the president would essentially stick to the plan he trumpeted starting in September 2011 and all through the campaign. It includes tax increases on the richest Americans, something Republicans have publicly refused to approve.

"I remain hopeful that productive conversations can be had in the days ahead, but the White House has to get serious," Boehner told reporters. "This is not a game. Jobs are on the line. The American economy is on the line. And this is a moment for adult leadership."

"No substantive progress has been made in the talks between the White House and the House over the last two weeks," Boehner charged.

In response, the White House redoubled its assault on Republicans for refusing to raise taxes on income above $200,000 for individuals and $250,000 for families.

"Right now, the only thing preventing us from reaching a deal that averts the fiscal cliff and avoids a tax hike on 98 percent of Americans is the refusal of Congressional Republicans to ask the very wealthiest individuals to pay higher tax rates," spokesman Josh Earnest said.?"It's time for Republicans in Washington to join the chorus of other voices - from the business community to middle class Americans across the country - who support a balanced approach that asks more from the wealthiest Americans."

In a sign of the political gamesmanship at work, Republican aides ? not the White House -- disclosed the offer even as they panned it. And the early response from White House aides was to point to Obama's victory over Mitt Romney to suggest that Americans will side with the president over his political foes.

Despite Boehner's blunt words, there have been signs on both sides that a compromise could be worked out. Some Republicans have publicly said they will support raising tax revenues, a party taboo, while the White House signaled that Obama would not insist that the wealthiest Americans pay the same tax rates they faced under Bill Clinton.

Chris Moody contributed to this report.

County divided over flood insurance plan

LYON COUNTY, Ky.--- When Flood 2011 hit, it caused a lot of pain and frustration, propelling county leaders into action.? Now that action is causing pain and frustration of its own. Here's what happened; Lyon County Judge Executive Wade White tells us after the flood the county "opted in" to the National Flood Insurance Program.?
That allowed people needing flood insurance, to get it. It also meant everyone with a mortgage who F.E.M.A. said was at risk for flooding had to buy flood insurance, and that's where the problem lies.

The judge says 77 homeowners who live just above the flood plain recently received letters from their banks saying they too have to buy the insurance.?
Homeowners are so outraged the county is considering backing out of the flood insurance program all together.
which would leave 5 homeowners unable to buy the flood insurance they desperately need.?

John Sullivan's Lyon County home sits on a hill on Lake Barkley, he's close to the water but not too close.
Sullivan says if the water rises above 375 feet, it goes over the dam, his house's base elevation is two feet above that, so he believe it's O.K.
But the recent F.E.M.A.map says he's wrong, so he must pay for flood insurance.

"How can you just arbitrarily pick a spot in our back yard and say it's going to flood, they can't prove it," Sullivan said.

But he has to prove F.E.M.A. wrong by hiring a surveyor, 76 other Lyon County homeowners are in the same boat and it's all because leaders wanted to give the five people whose homes do flood, a chance to buy flood insurance.

"Why wouldn't they check that first?? How do you just say you want to do something to help five people and not know it's going to impact everybody else," Sullivan asked.

Judge Executive Wade White admits he looked at these maps before they were effective during a comment and appeal period, he saw that the maps showed parts of some structures in the floodplain.

He didn't realize that meant owners would have to pay. he's tried to talk to F.E.M.A., but said they won't listen.

"When we can't control what's going on in our own county and help people then yeah, that makes me angry," White said.

As for Sullivan, he paid six hundred dollars for a survey. The surveyor said he was right, the F.E.M.A. maps were wrong.? They sent that off to F.E.M.A., now they're just waiting to hear what F.E.M.A. had to say.

If the county commissioners decide they do want out of this plan, the judge says they'd have to rescind the flood plain ordinance, before they do that, they have to meet three times.
Under federal law, mortgage companies are required to make customers purchase flood insurance if they're in a county that participates in the national flood insurance program.

Effective Online Marketing with Forums and Message Boards

This is a guest post by Olga Ionel.

Today?s companies are quickly recognizing the power that social media tools such as forums and message boards can have for finding new customers and spreading the word about products and services. While these platforms can be incredibly useful for raising awareness and evaluating the needs and desires of potential customers, they can also be harmful to a company?s reputation and even success should they be handled poorly.

Online marketing is key to success in today?s technologically-dependent society. It is nearly impossible for a company to compete without an internet presence, and the value of social media is apparent as more and more consumers are turning to the internet and social media platforms to find and share information regarding the products and services that they use and need.

forum-marketing

Photo Credit: Alexander Svensson on Flickr

Among these social media platforms, forums and message boards are the most popular for discussing products and services. It is believed that as much as 64% of women that use the internet with frequency commonly post product recommendations on forums. There are millions of forums and message boards across the internet, each with its own personality and audience. They can be independent sites or used in conjunction with blogs based on WordPress themes. However they are managed, forums and message boards allow for the free and open exchange of ideas, welcoming conversations among large numbers of people that are located in all areas.

Taking advantage of these platforms can benefit your company through generating conversation regarding your products and services, and eliciting the opinions of audiences relevant to your niche.

It is crucial, however, that the use of the platforms be taken very seriously, and that your management of your social media usage be firm as to prevent inappropriate activities from alienating potential clients and hurting your company?s reputation.

Below are some tips regarding the correct usage of forums and message boards for online marketing.

Register

Register as a valid user of the forum then seek out the ?Introductions? section. Use this section to offer an honest and forthcoming introduction of your company, your products and services, and your desire to generate interest and get feedback. Ask about advertising or sponsorship factors into the use of the site, and avoid sounding like you are trying to sell anything. You want the people on the forum to see you as a ?friend? rather than a faceless entity.

Don?t Immediately Begin Marketing

If your first and only posts are advertisements or solicitations you will build a negative reputation. You may even be banned by the monitors and your company will immediately get a negative mark, which could be devastating if this forum ranks high on searches.

Contact the Administrator

Find out who runs the forum and send him a private message. Commend him for the forum and ask if you could become a paid sponsor or advertiser. Ask if there are specific restrictions to marketing activities and begin developing a relationship that could later prove helpful.

Don?t ?Hide? Your Company

Do not register under a cutesy sounding name and pretend to be just a regular member of the forum and then start posting marketing messages under the guise of being a ?satisfied customer?. People will see through this and you could not only get in a lot of trouble on the forum, but your company?s reputation could be irreparably damaged.

Consider Banner Advertising

In addition to regularly posting on the site you should also consider purchasing advertising space on the site. If you select your message boards properly you will be advertising to a specific demographic most likely to be interested in the types of products and services that you offer. Putting an advertisement on the site gives you the opportunity to be visible and direct readers right to your site.

Don?t Be Pushy

You must be carefully with the posts that you make. Avoid going on the forum daily and just posting a generic marketing message without caring about what is being discussed in the threads. In order to be truly effective you must read the threads and direct your posts to what is being discussed, making them interesting and informative. Every post should not be marketing in nature.

Be a Valued Contributor

You do not want to get lost in the forum. Message boards generally move very quickly and if you only post every couple of days you are going to get buried. You must become a frequent and valued part of the conversations that are happening on the site?including posts that have nothing to do with marketing on the surface. Always be aware of what you are discussing and how it may impact your company, but participate richly.

Respond to Feedback

The goal of forums is to promote conversation. This means that you will likely have comments, criticisms, and questions added to your threads and posts. Respond to these. Be careful how you respond and make it as positive and effective as possible rather than attacking the person who left the comment.

Bankruptcy Advice You Can Put To Use - Empower Network

Bankruptcy may be hard for people to file for, but it may be necessary, sometimes. Before filing for bankruptcy, it is important that you fully understand what it means and what is involved in the bankruptcy process. Read this article for some helpful tips from those informed about bankruptcy.

TIP! After filing for bankruptcy, you could have trouble acquiring unsecured credit. A great way to rebuild your credit is to apply for a prepaid credit card.

You might find it hard to file successfully for bankruptcy, if your primary debt issue are your student loans. The rules are different in many states, but student loans are some of the most difficult types of debt to get discharged. You can get out of paying your student loans in a few situations, for instance, if the job you want to school for does not exist anymore.

Before you file for personal bankruptcy, be sure that you are cognizant of all current laws. Bankruptcy laws are in constant flux, so just because you knew the law last year doesn?t mean that the laws will be the same this year. Your state will have a website to check, or a number you can call, to learn the latest changes in the bankruptcy laws.

If you are in a position where you are unable to pay your debts, bankruptcy may be the only option for you. If this is the case for you, you should begin to investigate the legislation in your state. Each state has its own set of rules regarding bankruptcy. In some states, your home is protected, while in others it is not. Be aware of bankruptcy laws before filing your claim.

TIP! If you?re concerned about the details of keeping your car, try to ask your attorney about details regarding lowering your monthly payments. Often, you can negotiate a lower payment through bankruptcy.

If you cannot qualify for a Homestead Exemption once you have filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, try filing for Chapter 13 as well. You may be better off converting your Chapter 7 filing to a Chapter 13 bankruptcy, and it is important to talk to an experienced attorney regarding your next move.

Be certain to have a good understanding of bankruptcy regulations prior to filing a petition. You should not transfer your assets to anyone in the year preceding your bankruptcy filing. Not only that, but the filer cannot lawfully accrue additional debt just prior to filing.

Be certain to be transparent about all of your financial information when the filing of for personal bankruptcy. If you don?t do this, your file could be delayed or dismissed. Even if it?s a small sum, make sure it is listed. Some things to be included are: current loans, valuable vehicles and side jobs.

TIP! Exercise some care when you pick a lawyer to help you file for bankruptcy. Interview your prospective attorney regarding education and experience.

Remember that you have the option to file again if your bankruptcy filing gets dismissed due to an error on your part. However, in most cases you will only have the benefit of the automatic stay for 30 days after you file if your case was already dismissed once. If you can convince the judge that you have a good reason for your mistake and re-filing, you may get that stay extended.

Go through your debts and make sure they?ll be able to clear when you file for bankruptcy so that you don?t have to file for anything you don?t have to. There are a few debts that may remain depending on what they are. If you have debts that can not be removed with bankruptcy, arrange payments with them as soon as possible to improve your credit.

Normally, you will not lose your assets when filing bankruptcy. Many times you will be allowed to keep your personal property. In other words, your clothes, your television, your computer, your furniture, your jewelry and other household items are safe. Your current state?s laws, deciding between Chapter 7 or 13, and your current financial position will determine just how much you get to keep.

TIP! During a Chapter 13 bankruptcy, you may still be able to get a mortgage or car loan. However, it will be a longer and more arduous task.

In difficult financial situations, filing for bankruptcy is sometimes unavoidable. The article you just read should have given you some insight and inspiration on how to proceed with your bankruptcy case. By learning from others that have been in the same situation, it will make it easier on you in the long run.

(AP) ? The Georgia Bulldogs collected a trophy at midfield for another win over their state rival, then got some encouragement from the governor in their quest for a bigger reward.

No. 1.

Aaron Murray threw two touchdown passes, Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall each ran for a pair of TDs, and third-ranked Georgia stayed right in the thick of the national championship race with a 42-10 rout of Georgia Tech on Saturday.

Gov. Nathan Deal presented the "Governor's Cup" to the Bulldogs (11-1) after they beat the Yellow Jackets for the 11th time in 12 years. He congratulated both teams on a "great game" (a bit of a stretch, to say the least) before turning toward the jubilant Georgia players.

"Keep up the good work," Deal said. "We're looking for a national championship."

Georgia is two wins away.

The Bulldogs will face No. 2 Alabama for the Southeastern Conference championship in Atlanta next Saturday. The winner of that contest will likely advance to play in the BCS title game on Jan. 7.

"All that matters is this game," Georgia linebacker Christian Robinson said, looking ahead to facing the defending national champion Crimson Tide. "This is everything. This is what you play for."

Georgia Tech (6-6) didn't put up much of a fight. This one was a laugher right from the start as the home team scored just over a minute into the game, built a 28-3 halftime lead and was up 42-3 before the Yellow Jackets scored a meaningless TD in the fourth quarter.

"It was a pretty good thumping," Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson said. "We could not slow them down at all, which has been a recurring theme the last few times we've played them, and we couldn't finish drives offensively."

Murray completed 14 of 17 for 215 yards, becoming the first quarterback in SEC history to pass from more than 3,000 yards in three straight seasons.

Gurley finished with 97 yards on 12 carries and now has 14 touchdowns on the season, one shy of Herschel Walker's school freshman record set in 1980. Marshall, also a freshman, piled up 66 yards on just seven carries.

The Bulldogs certainly didn't look like a team that was looking ahead to Alabama.

"You don't do that when you're playing Georgia Tech," coach Mark Richt said. "This game means a lot for us. Our coaches prepared hard, they were diligent, and the players took to the coaching. I thought we played a superb game. I'm so proud of everybody. I could not have asked for a better today."

Bacarri Rambo and Alec Ogletree came up big for the Georgia defense. Rambo stripped the ball away at the Georgia 1 to stop the Yellow Jackets' first possession, as well as grabbing his 16th career interception to tie Jake Scott's school record. Ogletree had 15 tackles, several of which were downright brutal and the highest total by a Georgia defender this season.

For good measure, the Bulldogs ran their season total to 456 points, breaking the school scoring mark set by the 2002 SEC championship team.

"We put our foot on the pedal from the start didn't let up the entire game," said receiver Rhett McGowan, who hauled in one of Murray's touchdown passes.

Georgia Tech, amazingly enough, still has a chance to win the Atlantic Coast Conference title next weekend and earn a BCS bowl bid. The Yellow Jackets clinched a spot in the championship game against No. 10 Florida State after Miami pulled out from postseason consideration, hoping to lessen the blow from a pending NCAA investigation.

The Yellow Jackets won't have any chance of beating the Seminoles if they don't turn in a much better effort than this.

"Well, I look at it like another opportunity," Johnson said. "We'll see how they respond. You don't get those opportunities very often, so you need to take advantage of them."

Malcolm Mitchell returned the opening kickoff 47 yards to the Georgia Tech 44, and the rout was on. Murray completed an 11-yard pass to Gurley, Gurley broke off a 15-yard run, Murray hooked up with Arthur Lynch on a 15-yard pass, and Gurley ran 3 yards for the score. Four snaps, and it was 7-0. The game was 63 seconds old.

Georgia Tech appeared to be moving for a tying touchdown on its first possession. With nine straight runs, the Yellow Jackets ripped off five first downs and had the ball at the Georgia 20. Robert Godhigh tried to take it in from there, breaking tackles and staying on his feet all the way to the 1. But Rambo snatched the ball away before Godhigh got to the end zone, returning it 49 yards to midfield.

This time, the Bulldogs needed less than 3 minutes to put another touchdown on the board.

Gurley had runs of 15 and 10 yards, Murray passed to Mitchell for a 16-yard gain, and Gurley made it 14-0 with a 1-yard plunge.

Before the half was done, Georgia tacked on two more scores: Marshall's 15-yard run and Murray's 11-yard pass to McGowan. The Yellow Jackets ran for 220 yards in the first two quarters, but all they had to show for it was Chris Tanner's 38-yard field goal.

Georgia Tech's misery was epitomized by its final possession of the half. After another extended drive ? 13 plays covering 56 yards ? the Yellow Jackets had to settle for a field goal try on the last play. Tanner's 36-yarder was wide right by a good 10 yards, the almost entirely red-clad crowd letting out a sarcastic cheer.

Georgia piled it on in the third quarter. Jay Rome hauled in a 24-yard touchdown from Murray and Marshall scored for the second time, sprinting around right end for a 17-yard TD.

The Yellow Jackets had another miserable defensive effort, giving up more than 40 points for the sixth time this season.

"We've got to stick together because some guys were fading apart during the last bit of the game," linebacker Quayshawn Neely said. "We've got to stick together and hold tight because we've got something big coming up next week."

Obama makes history with Myanmar, Cambodia visits

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) ? On a history-making trip, President Barack Obama on Monday paid the first visit by an American leader to Myanmar and Cambodia, two Asian countries with troubled histories, one on the mend and the other still a cause of concern.

Obama's fast-paced, pre-Thanksgiving trip vividly illustrated the different paths the regional neighbors are taking to overcome legacies of violence, poverty and repression.

Cheered by massive flag-waving crowds, Obama offered long-isolated Myanmar a "hand of friendship" as it rapidly embraces democratic reforms. Hours later, he arrived in Cambodia to little fanfare, then pointedly criticized the country's strongman leader on the issue of human rights during a tense meeting.

Obama was an early champion of Myanmar's sudden transformation to civilian rule following a half-century of military dictatorship. He's rewarded the country, also known as Burma, with eased economic penalties, increased U.S. investment and now a presidential visit, in part to show other nations the benefits of pursuing similar reforms.

"You're taking a journey that has the potential to inspire so many people," Obama said during a speech at Myanmar's University of Yangon.

The Cambodians are among those Obama is hoping will be motivated. White House officials said he held up Myanmar, a once-pariah state, as a benchmark during his private meeting Monday evening with Prime Minister Hun Sen, the autocratic Cambodian leader who has held power for nearly 30 years. Hun Sen's rivals have sometimes ended up in jail or in exile.

Unlike the arrangement after Obama's meetings with Myanmar's President Thein Sein and democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, the U.S. and Cambodian leaders did not speak to the press following their one-on-one talks. They did step before cameras briefly before their meeting to greet each other with a brisk handshake and little warmth.

In private, U.S. officials said, Obama pressed Hun Sen to release political prisoners, stop land seizures and hold free and fair elections. Aides acknowledged the meeting was tense, with the Cambodian leader defending his practices, even as he professed to seek a deeper relationship with the U.S.

Ben Rhodes, Obama's deputy national security adviser, said the president told Hun Sen that without reforms, Cambodia's human rights woes would continue to be "an impediment" to that effort.

White House officials emphasized that Obama would not have visited Cambodia had it not been hosting two regional summit meetings the U.S. attends, a rare admonishment of a country on its own soil.

The Cambodian people appeared to answer Obama's cold shoulder in kind. Just a few small clusters of curious Cambodians gathered on the streets to watch his motorcade speed though the streets of Phnom Penh.

Winding down his trip, Obama talked on the sidelines of the East Asia Summit with Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda. Briefly addressing reporters before the private meeting began, Obama called the relationship between the U.S. and Japan a "cornerstone of prosperity and security in the region." The two leaders discussed jobs, trade and the economy.

Obama also carved out time for Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao in what was likely the president's last meeting with current Chinese leadership. At the top of the meeting, Obama called the relationship between the US and China "cooperative and constructive" and said it was important that the two countries have "clear rules of the road internationally for trade and investment."

"You and I share the view that the U.S.-China relationship is one of the most important bilateral relationships in the world," Wen added, even as he acknowledged differences on issues.

Obama's talks with Noda and with Wen were likely to be his last bilateral meetings with both men.

Noda dissolved his country's parliament last week, setting the stage for new elections his party is unlikely to win. And China is undergoing its first leadership transition in a decade, with Wen and President Hu Jintao stepping down to clear the way for new leaders in the country's Communist Party.

Obama has added the Asia summit to his annual list of high-priority international meetings as he seeks to expand U.S. influence in the region.

A welcome sign did greet Obama upon his arrival ? but it heralded Wen, not the American president.

Human rights groups fear that because Obama delivered his condemnation of Hun Sen in private, government censors will keep his words from reaching the Cambodian people. And they worry the prime minister will then use Obama's visit to justify his grip on power and weaken the will of opposition groups.

"If Hun Sen's narrative about this visit is allowed to gel, it will create a perception that the United States and other international actors stand with Hun Sen, and not with the Cambodian people," said John Sifton, Asia director at Human Rights Watch. "It will be a tremendous blow to Cambodians who challenge his rule."

Obama's visit to Myanmar was also viewed critically by some international organizations, which saw the trip as a premature reward for a country that still holds political prisoners and has been unable to contain ethic violence.

Aware of that criticism, Obama tempered some of his praise for Myanmar during his six-hour visit. He underscored that the reforms that have taken hold over the past year are "just the first steps on what will be a long journey."

Perhaps the sharpest calls for caution came from Suu Kyi, Myanmar's longtime democracy champion. After meeting with Obama at the home where she spent years under house arrest, she warned that the most difficult part of the transition will be "when we think that success is in sight."

"Then we have to be very careful that we're not lured by the mirage of success," Suu Kyi said, speaking with Obama by her side.

Obama will return to Washington before dawn Wednesday, in time for the ceremonial pardoning of the Thanksgiving turkey.

Hurricane Sandy Thanksgiving Facebook Page Connects Needy Residents With Dinner Hosts

A Facebook page created in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy wants to ensure every resident will get to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal.

An anonymous admin organizes the effort on Hurricane Sandy- Thanksgiving Adopt A Family For Dinner, a page created on November 5 with an inaugural post inviting families to connect.

"With the televised visions of the heartbreaking losses from Hurricane Sandy, that have affected so many in NJ and NY, I have decided that I would like to help by matching people in need with families willing to invite them into their homes for a home-made (or store bought ) Thanksgiving Dinner," said the post. "Let's offer these families something that they can be truly thankful for during this season of giving."

Anyone living in New York or New Jersey can send the page a message, and they'll hear back with information about their match. Or they could post directly.

"Feel free to leave your invitations on this page for families in need," another post read. Additional posts pointed users in the direction of local organizations, such as churches, where free Thanksgiving dinners for affected families would be provided.

Over the course of a couple weeks, more and more visitors came to the page, sending the number of 'Likes' from zero to several hundred. The moderator, while trying to loop in mainstream aid organizations, noticed what anyone still struggling in the storm's wake could tell you -- that calls for help seemed to exceed the amount of relief available.

"Red Cross is overwhelmed and no one seems to be answering phones over the weekend," a post dated November 19 read.

But other successful Facebook pages, like one in New Jersey that some residents used as an alternative to 911 call centers, illustrate social media's potential in the wake of disaster.

The admin of the Thanksgiving dinner page, therefore, had reasons to remain optimistic.

A Case for Throwing Out the Old Way We Think About Teachers

Barnett Berry shows a picture of himself from 1979 to a group of Arkansas teachers.

The educators laugh at the young, bright-eyed teacher, who is now president of the Center for Teacher Equality. He tells them it?s been decades since he's been in a classroom, but that doesn?t mean he is clueless about what they handle on a daily basis. He also shares where he thinks the teaching profession needs to go.

?There is a difference between those who teach and those who lead,? Berry said during the lecture for Arkansas teachers at the William J. Clinton Presidential Center.

He added, ?Teachers need to transform teachers.?

More: Op-Ed: Want to Improve School Districts? Listen to Teachers

The first way to do that? Forget about calling teachers, well, teachers. Berry would rather call them ?teacherpreneurs.? He sees them as having additional roles as policy researchers, assessment experts, and community organizers.

Berry envisions 600,000 well-compensated teacherpreneurs in classrooms by 2030, the year children born in 2012 graduate from high school.

He expands upon the teacherpreneurs concept in Teaching 2030: What We Must Do For Our Students and Our Public Schools, the book he penned with 12 teachers from around the country.

During his lecture, Berry points out that everything that needs to be done in America?s public school system is already being done somewhere on the planet.

?There are schools where the highest pay in the building is for a practicing teacher,? he said. ?What if the highest paid person at your school was the teacher??

According to Berry, to forge a bold path in classrooms, the old way of thinking about teachers needs to vanish. That means forgetting the early 20th century model of a single salary, or the late 20th century viewpoint of policymakers still opting for low teacher pay. Forget the Hollywood image of the teacher whose main job is to keep his or her students in line and be adored by the community.

If the federal government can change people?s behavior with smoking, it can change the way people think about teaching.

?That imagery is still in the heads of people who make decisions,? Berry said. ?We must overcome the images to reform.?

Berry feels strongly that Washington must have a role in this.

?If the federal government can change people?s behavior with smoking, it can change the way people think about teaching,? he said.

He also envisions a world where teachers are ambassadors for education, public engagers, policy mavens and parent partners. They should always be learning, and to invoke Bill Clinton, they need to be bridges to the 21st century.

For example, Berry said, America?s students and educators have no choice but to fully embrace technology, and teachers should not be fearful of these changes. Berry pointed out that millions of students have access to technology via smart phones, but teachers often won?t let their students use the devices.

His theory is that teaching the ?Google Way? doesn?t endanger teachers? jobs but rather offers students the chance to learn around the clock.

By using the internet, he said, students can link to other students around the world. They can have global market preparedness. They can monitor their own learning.

For all the drastic changes needed in the teaching profession, Berry is confident it can happen.

?I?m optimistic of the future because in some ways we could have done much worse with teachers and public policy in the last 10 or 15 years,? he said. ?It?s time for teachers to take back their profession.?

To fire up the crowd, Barry flashed back to 1979 and played, what he said, was one of his favorite songs from that year ? ?Ain?t No Stoppin? Us Now? by R&B duo McFadden & Whitehead. The teachers laughed again, and the minute he stopped speaking, surrounded Barry as if he was an education rock star.

Nokia's new maps app hits iPhone, doesn't quite satisfy

2 hrs.

You may be itching for an app to replace the Maps app Apple threw into iOS 6, but Nokia's new Here Maps app likely won't scratch you the right way.

Nokia's?app offers plenty of points of interest (which are sometimes scarce in Apple's version), live traffic information, turn-by-turn navigation, public transportation information, and more. But unfortunately all those features are built on top of an app so aesthetically displeasing that folks who are used to Apple or Google's mapping solutions might feel as if they stepped into the wrong century.

While beauty is in the eye of the beholder and most could look beyond the Here Maps app's antiquated user interface, its odd quirks are likely deal breakers. The app is oddly slow at times, public transportation directions are often questionable for even the simplest of routes, and the app seems to favor the scenic routes far too often. What's the point of a navigation app if it takes you from point A to point C to point D before finally circling back to point B?

I thought that my experience with Here Maps might've been unusual or that perhaps I missed something significant, but it appears that I'm not alone in my disappointment.?The Verge's Aaron Souppouris declared that "the wait for a true Google Maps replacement continues" after testing the app and finding it to display "some buggy behavior."?Wired's Alexandra Chang called the app "a buggy eyesore" and?TechCrunch's Darrell Etherington cautions that its "not entirely without its own rough edges."

Long story short? Since the app's free, you might as well give it a shot. Just don't expect to have your mind blown, 'cause this one won't fill the void Apple left in our hearts when it yanked the Google Maps app from iOS.

New diagnostic method noninvasive, inexpensive

Health professionals may soon have a new method of diagnosing Parkinson's disease, one that is noninvasive and inexpensive, and, in early testing, has proved to be effective more than 90 percent of the time.

In addition, this new method has the potential to track the progression of Parkinson's, as well as measure the effectiveness of treatments for the disorder, said Rahul Shrivastav, professor and chairperson of Michigan State University's Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders and a member of the team developing the new method.

It involves monitoring a patient's speech patterns specifically, movement patterns of the tongue and jaw.

"In Parkinson's disease, a common limitation is that the movements become slow and have a reduced range," said Shrivastav. "We believe we see this pattern in speech too the tongue doesn't move as far as it should, doesn't move as quickly as it should and produces subtle changes in speech patterns."

This method is particularly sensitive to Parkinson's disease speech and, Shrivastav said, is effective with only two seconds of speech.

"That's significant in several ways: The detection methodology is noninvasive, easy to administer, inexpensive and capable of being used remotely and in telemedicine applications," he said.

Presently there are no tried-and-true methods for diagnosing Parkinson's. Shrivastav said if a person is showing early symptoms of the disease, which include tremors, slower movements or rigid muscles, he or she is given a drug to treat the disease.

"If the symptoms go away," he said, "then it's assumed you must have Parkinson's disease."

In more advanced cases, he said, symptoms are usually prominent enough that it is fairly easy to diagnose.

Parkinson's disease is a neurological disorder affecting a half million people in the United States, with 50,000 newly diagnosed cases every year. It occurs when nerve cells in the brain stop producing a chemical called dopamine, which helps control muscle movement. Without dopamine, the nerve cells cannot properly send messages, leading to the loss of muscle function.

While there is no cure for Parkinson's disease, early detection is particularly important since the treatments currently available for controlling symptoms are most effective at that stage.

###

Shrivastav and his colleagues from the University of Florida's Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences, recently presented their findings at the Acoustical Society of America Conference.

Universal Eyeing "Straight Outta Compton"

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Negotiations are underway for Universal Pictures to pick up "Straight Outta Compton," F. Gary Gray's feature film about the hip hop band N.W.A., from New Line, a person familiar with the situation has told TheWrap.

The feature follows the legendary hip hop band's rise to stardom, from being teenagers in poor Los Angeles neighborhoods to the breaking up of the band.

Andrea Berloff penned the script for the film, which includes Ice Cube (pictured) among the producers.

"Straight Outta Compton" also looks at the controversy surrounding the group, Easy E's death from AIDS, the beginning of Ice Cube's solo career, and the forming of Death Row Records.

The original N.W.A. line up included the artists Arabian Prince, DJ Yella, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, Ice Cube and the rapper MC Ren. "Straight Outta Compton" was the name of the group's first album, which marked the beginning of the new "gangsta era" in rap.

In July, Universal also acquired "Ride Along" in turnaround from New Line, with Kevin Hart and Ice Cube starring in this comedy about a risk averse school teacher. The film is due to be released in January.

New Line did not respond for comment to TheWrap. Universal could not be reached for comment.

Why do some relationships work while others don't? - CoupleDumb

Real Relationship Advice

?

relationshipsBig 210x300 Why do some relationships work while others don’t?

CoupleDumb has been writing about relationships for nearly 4 years. We have tackled a lot of subjects regarding relationships and revisited the same subjects as the years have progressed. We have written and posted over 1000 posts and we still have 1000?s more to write. The subject of relationships is just as rich today as it was 4 years ago. The funny thing is that we are still asked the same questions. Why do some relationships work while others don?t? What is the secret to a happily ever after? And finally, how do you fix what?s seems broken?

First, we want to remind our readers that we are not about being miserably married. We are committed to happy relationships and sometimes what makes a person most happy or gives them the potential of the most happiness is being divorced/single.

So to answer the burning questions:

Why do some relationships work while others don?t?

This is a very loaded question because there is an element that there is a trick or magic behind a happy marriage. There is a supposition that you are either happy or un-happy. In reality, many people live in sex-less, love-less marriages. They go about their days feeling consigned to living a half-life; marriage being a death sentence instead of a relationship that encourages the highest possibility for each spouse. We would say being married is not the goal. Being happily married should be your goal.

Each relationship is unique but there are some red flags that are a sign that a relationship won?t work:

1. Disparity: Statistically, if a man marries a woman who makes more money than him or has a higher status, the relationship is not expected to work. The statistics on this have softened over the years as men become more evolved. However, disparity must always be discussed within the relationship. When a person in a relationship gauges their status in the relationship based on their income or contributions there will be an issue. Which leads directly to the next problem.

2. Competing: Couples that are constantly competing will not work. Marriage and relationships are not a competition.? There is nothing wrong with a little competition but if you keep score in arguments, sex and other relationship areas, you are doomed.

3. Being right/Positioning: We don?t believe in compromise but we also do not believe that any position is worth losing your happiness over. If you are never willing to look at a different point of view, you have no business being in a relationship.

4. Sexual incompatibility: We take issue with this as an issue. Sex is not like baseball where you are born with a prowess that can only be called a gift. Sure, some people are better than others but that has more to do with commitment to the act than being gifted. Any two individuals that love each other should be willing to do what it takes to bring pleasure to their partner. If not, then you are doomed.

5. Different Values: A foundation is the most important part of a healthy relationship. Different values are not just a difference of opinions but a different way of looking at life.

Come back tomorrow as we look at other relationship questions.
