BlackBerry's last hope: A fully redesigned OS and two smokin' new phones

3 hrs.

Research in Motion officially launched?BlackBerry 10 and two shiny?new smartphones???the BlackBerry Z10 and Q10?? in an event in New York City on Wednesday (while also renaming itself ... to BlackBerry).?The "reinvented" experience is being hailed as the company's last hope to properly challenge Apple's iOS and Google's Android.

"BlackBerry 10 is here," CEO Thorsten Heins declared moments after stepping onto a stage during the company's launch event in New York City on Wednesday. "BlackBerry 10 builds on 20 years of experience [...] and it has a user experience unlike anything you've seen before."

BlackBerry 10?? which will be available on the BlackBerry Z10 now?and, by April or May, the keyboard-equipped?Q10 ? will supposedly offer one of the best multitasking and typing experiences on the market.

"Bringing an entirely new platform to the market [...] took careful planning, and we knew that it was risky," Heins acknowledged.

The presentation?emphasized how everything just "flows" on BlackBerry 10.?Users will likely spend much?of their time in the BlackBerry Hub, which integrates social network notifications, BlackBerry Messages (BBM), and email. You can respond to all these notifications and messages without ever actually leaving this hub. As the Hub serves as a universal inbox for all notifications, it certainly looks appealing for those who split their time between the various forms of mobile communication.

When necessary, work and personal lives (and data) can be separated, thanks to BlackBerry Balance. This means that it is possible for users to check out of one aspect of their lives (such as on the weekends, perhaps, when work might take the backseat).

BlackBerry Messenger, one of the incredibly popular features of the operating system, has gotten a nice little revamp with support for video and voice calls as well as screensharing. Curiously enough, while the video calling feature was heavily focused on, BlackBerry did also point out that Skype is among the partners who will be offering an app on BlackBerry 10. (Angry Birds, Amazon Kindle, and other popular apps will also be joining the over 70,000 apps available for the operating system at this point.)

While there is a great deal riding on BlackBerry 10, the operating system has been getting plenty of favorable reviews already.?"Reviewers like the browser speed and the intuitive keyboard on [BlackBerry's] new touchscreen,"?Reuters explains. "A feature called BlackBerry Balance, which keeps corporate and personal data separate, could help [BlackBerry] rebuild its traditional base of big business customers."

And as all eyes are on the BlackBerry 10 multitasking setup, notifications management and redesigned?keyboard, the Associated Press' Rob Gillies points out that some are going as far as to?suggest?that these features could be superior to their Android and iOS counterparts.?

They will have to be?? if BlackBerry hopes to reclaim a fraction of its lost market share.

Wayne Lam, senior analyst for wireless communications at analytics firm IHS, says that with "smartphones soon to reach their maximum penetration, time is running out for [BlackBerry] and other Apple/Samsung/Google competitors to stake a claim in the smartphone business."

On the other hand, people who may be growing tired of Android and iOS may be eager to try out something new.

"I have to believe that there is some level of user fatigue that plays into the longevity of some of these platforms," Kevin Burden, head of mobility at industry consulting firm?Strategy Analytics, told Reuters. "RIM is probably timing it right."

Wireless industry analyst Jeff Kagan agrees.?"Blackberry is?not too late. True, 92 percent of the smartphone market may have?already chosen either an Apple iPhone or Google Android, but that's really because there were no really good competitors,"?he?wrote?in?a?note.?

"This new Blackberry will be a strong competitor for the number three position. They won't come close to number one or two where Google and Apple are, but the market does want more choices."

The first BlackBerry 10 device, the Z10, will become available in mid-March. Pricing will vary by carrier, but Verizon has already revealed that it will offer the phone fo $200 (with a two-year service agreement). Sprint and AT&T have?pointed out that they will certainly offer the device, but not announced pricing details just yet. Meanwhile, Heins says he expects the Q10 to appear "in the April timeframe."

As for the name change, Heins?told the audience,?"We have reinvented this company and we want to reflect this with our brand."

Rampaging monkeys injure 7

MAKASSAR, Indonesia -- A mob of wild monkeys has gone on a rampage in a village in eastern Indonesia, entering houses and attacking residents, injuring seven people.

One of the victims was listed in critical condition.

Ambo Ella, a spokesman for Sidendeng Rappang District in South Sulawesi province, says the surprise attack by about 10 monkeys happened in Toddang Pulu village.

He said late Wednesday that a 16-year-old boy was badly bitten in Monday?s attack and is being treated at the hospital.

He believes the troop came from a nearby forest protected by a local tribe.

It is unclear why the monkeys, which are usually afraid of humans and flee when they hear human voices, emerged and attacked.

Local authorities are investigating to find out what prompted the attack, which caused panic among villagers.

Home Improvement Ideas

Disappointments abound when a home owner decides to begin a home improvement project. Many find themselves disappointed when they find that they have hired an inferior contractor, didn't plan ahead or tried to complete a job they weren't prepared for. This article discusses some smart tips for making sure that your home improvement projects turn out well. Read on to learn more.

Devise a plan for getting rid of your debris. Home improvement projects which involves demolition will produce debris. To ensure this debris doesn't impede your work, decide how you're going to discard it before even beginning the project. Rent a large dumpster or borrow a large truck to get rid of everything.

Make sure your home is balanced. Improve the quality of your sound at home. Balancing can help fix a wobbly, noisy ceiling fan. Tightening all the screws on the fan's moving parts, such as those connecting the blades with the arms and the arms to the motor housing, can curtail annoying noises and correct wobbles. While you are up there tightening the screws, be sure to clean the blades, as dust can create an imbalance in your fan.

Be careful that you don't lose track of how long you have been outdoors in the heat when working on summer projects. Staying hydrated is one of the most important safety precautions you can take on especially hot days. Take regular breaks, not only to stay hydrated but to step back and appreciate the work you've done.

Look at several types of insulation to use if you are considering residing your home. The different types available are permeable house wrap, rigid foam insulation and completely protective wall systems. Find out the costs for each option, and decide how much you want to spend.

When people look at homes, the number of bathrooms plays a major role in determining how they feel about the house. A home's value relies heavily on whether or not it has adequate bathrooms. Adding an extra bath or even two baths can significantly add to the value of your home.

Install windows that have secondary glazing. These windows are pricier, but they will greatly reduce your energy costs and noises from outside. Think of getting these kinds of windows if you want to save some time and money later on. They are energy efficient and make it easy for you to heat or cool the home.

There are some telltale signs to look for that signal repairs are needed on a deck. See how the wood is holding up and that there are no cracks. See if there is any sign of rot. Check to see if there are any nails sticking up.

If you are repairing the damage from a natural disaster, be careful when hiring a contractor. Some people are scammers that will take advantage of people in need. Do research before you hire someone to do repairs on your home.

Home improvement jobs can often go wrong if they're not managed properly. This article has some great tips to assist you with properly planning, managing, and finishing your upcoming home improvement jobs. Using these tips, you'll be able to successfully plan and carry out your project.

Vine, Hardcore Porn Should Not Be An Editor?s Pick Video

IMG_0156Video sharing app Vine came under fire this past weekend for having a bit of a porn problem. That it has adult content on the network shouldn't surprise anyone, and as long as it's something you have to look for, I think criticizing them for it is as sensible as criticizing Google. But today (right now, as of this writing) the top featured pick on my home feed, and on the feed of many users judging by Twitter, is a porn video. Labelled "Editor's Pick."

Study Bolsters Quantum Vibration Scent Theory

Girl Smelling Marigolds Girl Smelling Marigolds Image: Flickr/moodboardphotography

How does the sense of smell work? Today two competing camps of scientists are at war over this very question. And the more controversial theory has just received important new experimental confirmation.

At issue is whether our noses use delicate quantum mechanisms for sensing the vibrations of odor molecules (aka odorants). Does the nose, in other words, read off the chemical makeup of a mystery odorant?say, a waft of perfume or the aroma of wilted lettuce?by ?ringing? it like a bell? Chemistry and forensics labs do this all the time with spectrometers?machines that bounce infrared light off mystery materials to reveal the telltale vibrations that the light provokes. Olfaction might, according to the vibration theory of smell, do the same using tiny currents of electrons instead of infrared photons (see previous coverage of the vibration theory here).

The predominant theory of smell today says: No way. The millions of different odorants in the world are a little more like puzzle pieces, it suggests. And our noses contain scores of different kinds of receptors that each prefer to bind with specific types of piecesSo a receptor that is set to bind to a molecule called limonene sends a signal to our brains when it finds that compound, and that's one of the cues behind the smell of citrus. Likewise that same receptor wouldn't bind to hydrogen sulfide?which smells of rotten eggs.

So, the promoters of the standard theory say, the familiar chemical interactions between receptor and odorant are all that's needed to explain olfaction. No fancy quantum vibration theory is necessary.

Yet here's a twist: odorant molecules typically contain many hydrogen atoms. And hydrogen comes in multiple forms, each very chemically similar to the others. But those different isotopes of hydrogen do strongly affect how a molecule vibrates. So deuterium, containing a hydrogen nucleus that has both a proton and a neutron (as opposed to plain-old-hydrogen that has just a proton), might help scientists discriminate between the proposed vibration and standard chemical binding theories of olfaction.

According to new research published today in PLoS ONE, human noses can sniff out the presence of at least some kinds of deuterium. Specifically, experimenters found regular musk molecules smelled different from ones that contain deuterium. "Deuterated" musks, says researcher Luca Turin of the Alexander Fleming Biomedical Sciences Research Center in Greece, lose much of their musky odor and instead contain overtones of burnt candle wax.

The finding represents a victory for the vibration theory, Turin says. And, he adds, it makes some sense, when you consider the purpose of our olfactory ability?whatever its mechanism is. The natural world contains thousands of types of molecules. Some are good for us, and some are bad. The nose helps to distinguish one from the other. "Olfaction is trying to be like an analytical chemist," Turin says. "It's trying to identify unknowns." Chemists identify unknowns using spectrometers. Olfactory receptors, according to the vibration theory, act like little wetware spectrometers.

Adding to Turin's quiver is a 2011 finding in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences indicating that drosophila flies, too, can smell the difference between a molecule called acetophenone (which to humans smells sweet) and its deuterated cousin.

That?s all well and good, says Eric Block, professor of chemistry at the University at Albany in New York State. But, he says, it hardly proves the vibration theory. For one, he points out that Turin once claimed humans, like drosophilia, could sniff out a deuterated version of the molecule acetophenone from the regular stuff. But in 2004 Nature Neuroscience published a contrary claim, that human noses can't smell the presence of deuterium in acetophenone (Scientific American is part of Nature Publishing Group). In Turin?s new paper, he says he's confirmed the 2004 finding, but Block remains unconvinced.

Energy literacy: visualizing the impacts of unlimited growth

Humans have already amply demonstrated the resource limitations of unbridled economic growth by not anticipating and then not addressing the myriad critical environmental and resource problems we face today, Cobb writes.

By Kurt Cobb,?Guest blogger / January 28, 2013

Dark clouds of smoke and fire emerge as oil burns during a controlled fire in the Gulf of Mexico, following the April 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion. Will we continue to accept the religion of unlimited economic growth and energy production, Cobb asks, until a remorseless nature enforces its limits upon us?

Taken with the eye of the fine art photographer, the book?s images project a disturbing beauty. They seduce the viewer with their attention to composition, color, light, and perspective. This impels us to enter into these images and contemplate rather than merely visually consume an exploding offshore oil platform; a desolated landscape strewn with derelict drilling rigs; a decapitated mountain; a pelican coated with oil; a coal strip mine seen from its bottom; and a tar sands mine seen from the sky. Once drawn in, the viewer cannot help but feel the immensity and drama of the energy issues we now face. And, once drawn in, the viewer wants more images that will somehow explain this immense drama and its significance for each of us.

Leafing through the pages, you will be astonished at each successive image. Eventually, you will reach a substantial block of text. By then you will be more than ready for some explanation to put into words what all these images taken together might mean.

Stretch your travel dollar with savvy tips: go in off-season, fly mid-week

FREDERICTON - With a new year underway many of us are thinking ahead to vacation time but, with today's economic pressures, it can be difficult to set aside the cash for a big trip.

The goal is to have an enjoyable vacation without breaking the bank.

There are lots of ways to be frugal with your vacation budget.

"It's not about being cheap," said Gary Howard of the Canadian Automobile Association. "It's about stretching your vacation dollar."

Start by asking what you want from your vacation and then look at your options.

"As an example, an all-inclusive week in Cuba might be far less expensive than three nights in New York," Howard said.

He suggests avoiding travelling in peak seasons as a way to save some money.

"There are peak seasons and shoulder seasons in everything that you do, whether it is a cruise, Disney World, Myrtle Beach, the Caribbean, or whatever it might be," he said.

Off-season rates for hotels and resorts are often a fraction of the peak price.

But don't always just go for the lowest price, Howard said. Paying a bit more for a larger room or one that has a kitchenette could improve your vacation experience or even save you money in the long run by allowing you to prepare some meals there.

At many hotels breakfast is included in the cost of the accommodation, which can be a substantial saving, especially for a large family.

Consider having your big meal of the day at lunch time when many restaurants have deals, or packing a picnic lunch to tote along with you.

When it comes to travel, you can often find discounts by flying mid-week rather than on a weekend.

Howard advises booking your trip early to get the best selection.

But Peter Dielissen of Fredericton, N.B., is a proponent of using websites like Priceline.com and Hotwire.com to bid on rooms in an effort to save money.

The 66-year-old has also made great use of his Aeroplan points to travel around the globe on many occasions.

He lived and worked in Toronto, Vancouver and Yukon before moving to Fredericton and began collecting Aeroplan points on his flights and on a credit card that gives points for purchases.

"I started putting everything on my credit card," Dielissen said.

"When I retired in 2007 I had one million Aeroplan points."

Howard said when looking for a deal on flights, don't just check your local airport. You can often find savings by flying from another airport located a few hours drive away.

Consider driving to your vacation destination if it is a reasonable distance. The savings can be multiplied when you look at the price of gas for one vehicle versus airplane tickets for all members of your family.

As well, there may be things to see and do along the way that you would miss by flying ? adding extra value to your vacation time.

Many hotels offer loyalty points you can exchange for free rooms, upgrades or other perks.

It is worth signing up in advance for their programs because the points from one trip could provide free rooms for your next vacation. Also watch for promotions when you can collect bonus points for stays during specific dates.

Joining an auto club like CAA can more than pay for itself when you take advantage of hotel, restaurant and attraction discounts, plus the access to free maps, travel books and expert advice.

Good advice can save you a lot of money. Ask friends and family about a destination before you make your plans.

The Internet has become an endless source of information to allow you to research a vacation, compare and book hotels, find attractions and restaurants, and generally help you get the most out of your trip.

Many hotels offer a discount if you book online. Some offer a substantial discount if you pay in advance, but there may be no refund if you need to cancel.

"Do your research online, speak with family and friends, but when it comes to doing your actual booking the best value you're going to be able to get is from a travel agent," Howard said. "These people have the experience, they have the technology and they can save you a lot of time."

Complete vacation packages such as all-inclusive trips to Caribbean resorts can provide a great saving over paying for flights, hotels, meals and drinks separately.

Howard said cruises also offer a great value for your vacation dollar.

"You can take a seven-day cruise and visit five countries," he said. "There are lots of activities onboard, your meals are included, and you've got entertainment onboard."

"It's a multi-faceted vacation all in one."

There are lots of other ways to stretch your vacation dollar, ranging from the use of free hotel shuttles to avoiding roaming charges on your cellphone while you travel.

Howard said it just makes sense to get the most out of your vacation dollar.

"It's your vacation and you can't get that time back," he said.

Buy Now: All Apple MacBook Air Laptops Are $200 Off At Best Buy ...

?

rsz_apple-macbook-air

If you?re in the market for a new laptop and you?re a fan of Apple products, you?re in luck. As The Verge and Business Insider reported, Best Buy is having a huge $200 off sale on all MacBook Air Laptops. It?s causing a bit of an uproar as Apple products are rarely, if ever, allowed to be discounted by retailers.

Even this past Black Friday 2012, Apple only discounted its MacBook Air laptops by $100. The new MacBook Air?s are rumored to be coming out in June 2013, so perhaps Apple is allowing retailers to clear merchandise. Either way, it?s good for business owners and consumers.

Here are your MacBook Air options:

The Verge also reported that at one point, Amazon matched Best Buy?s price for the $799 11-inch MacBook Air model, but it doesn?t seem to be the case anymore.

If you?re interested, you better hurry as the sale ends today or while supplies last. Good luck and happy shopping! Let us know in the comments below if you picked one up.

NHL returns with strong television rating

NEW YORK (AP) ? NHL fans have tuned in to hockey's return to television.

NBC's broadcast Saturday earned the highest preliminary rating for a non-Winter Classic regular-season game since 2002. The network said Sunday its regional coverage of Blackhawks-Kings and Penguins-Flyers averaged a 2.0 overnight rating. That's up 67 percent from the average for regular-season games on NBC last year.

The abbreviated NHL season opened Saturday after a lockout wiped out the first three months.

Ratings represent the percentage of homes with televisions tuned into a program. Overnight ratings measure the country's largest markets.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) ? Six Filipinos were among the hostages killed by militants who laid siege to an Algerian gas field for four days, the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs said Monday.

Sixteen Filipinos have been accounted for and four others are still missing since Algerian special forces stormed the plant on Saturday to end the siege, Foreign Affairs spokesman Raul Hernandez told reporters.

He said the information came from Algerian authorities, which expressed their condolences to the Philippine government and the victims' families.

"The deaths of the six Filipinos were a direct result of the hostage-taking incident in the area and mostly by gunshot wounds and the effects of the explosions," Hernandez said.

He said his office was notifying the families and arranging for the repatriation of the victims' remains, while the government was focused on finding the missing four Filipinos. A team from the Philippine Embassy in neighboring Libya, which covers Algeria, was on the ground in that country.

Four Filipino survivors were treated in a hospital in Algiers, Hernandez said.

Most of the workers were employed by Japanese companies, he said.

A total of 1,780 Filipinos work in Algeria. They are part of 10 million overseas workers, or 10 percent of the population employed abroad.

Choose Your Corporate Structure Wisely | Danjur | Success Secrets ...

By Charles Lewis

There are a lot of big decisions to be made when starting a new business venture. One of the biggest is what legal form your start-up will be taking ? you know, the type of company or corporation you?ll be forming.

Are you going small-time and sticking with the sole proprietorship model? Or are you going big and forming an LLC, C-Corporation or S-Corporation?

Each has its distinct advantages and disadvantages as you will see below.

Sole Proprietorship

This option is really designed for the ?accidental? entrepreneur and those looking to sell a few things or try their hand at business, albeit dangerously.

Sure, that sole proprietorship (or other non-corporate business type) is easy to set-up and cheap as they come, but it will not ultimately get you where you need to go if you have your sites set higher than a swap meet.

As an individual running an SP, you would have no protection from creditors or liabilities, which can cost you ? everything. Also, no investor or serious business type will give you the time of day unless you have a proper company foundation. And guess what? An SP does not offer a giant slab on concrete on which to firmly support your business.

DOWNSIDES: Too many to mention. Avoid at all costs, unless you are selling flowers out of the back of a van on the side of the road.

C-Corporation

The mighty C is a complicated beast for sure, but investors ask for it by name. First off, by incorporating, you are offering yourself protection from the above-mentioned possibility of personal ruin should your venture fail.

There are also many tax advantages, although other incorporation types offer better flexibility in this area. One of the more popular moves is that you can pay half of your taxes in your corporation at a lower tax rate, and then pay yourself a salary that would be lower than if you got it all at once.

So, in essence, you end up paying two lower tax rates. Pretty cool. You can also deduct health insurance with a C-Corp, which is nice.

A note to all who are thinking of taking this adventure all the way to Silicon Valley ? those guys and girls prefer you to have a C-Corp set up in the state of Delaware. Why Delaware? Please read our previous article ?3 Stellar States To Start That New Business In? for more info in this area.

DOWNSIDES: Complicated taxes, formalities like corporate minutes, payroll taxes.

S-Corporation

The S-Corp is for those who want to have the same protection as a C-Corporation but want to handle the taxes differently. In particular, S-Corps do not pay taxes, instead they file an ?informational? return.

S-Corp taxes are handled and paid instead by the owner, through personal returns.

Other advantages gained by using an S-Corp: The corporation does not die with the owner. Statistically, S-Corps are not hassled by the IRS as much as, say, a sole proprietorship. Also, those expenses racked up in the name of your business may be deductible.

There are also some savings to be had in the area of self-employment taxes.

DOWNSIDE: Limited to 100 shares.

Limited Liability Corporation (LLC)

Then there?s the LLC. It?s simpler, but often forgotten. As with C- and S-Corporations, an LLCs individual owners ? or shareholders ? are usually protected from any liabilities or debts that the company may rack up.

LLCs are also great due to the fact that there are few, if any, restrictions on ownership in addition to management of the company.

Get this: no taxes! That?s right, there are no tax bills at the corporate level, as all taxes are handled by the owners and managers individually. Add to that very little in the way of paperwork and much less in the way of official meetings and other legal hoops and you have a pretty strong upside.

DOWNSIDE: LLC?s individual tax rate can be higher than if you had a C-Corp.

St. Louis, nation mourns Musial's death

By R.B. FALLSTROM

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:23 a.m. ET Jan. 20, 2013

ST. LOUIS (AP) - St. Louis Cardinals reliever Mitchell Boggs was at a party back home in Georgia for his sister's wedding when the gathering suddenly turned somber.

The news had spread that Hall of Famer Stan Musial died on Saturday. He was 92.

"Everybody knew who Stan Musial was," Boggs said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "Everyone knew what a great person he was."

A moment of silence was observed before the start of the Rhode Island-Saint Louis men's basketball game across town, and prior to the third period of the St. Louis Blues' NHL opener against the Detroit Red Wings when public address announcer Tom Calhoun described Musial as "St. Louis' favorite son."

Former Cardinals manager Tony La Russa interrupted his annual Animal Rescue Foundation event onstage to pass on the sad news. The Cardinals set up a memorial around the larger of the two Musial statues, a longtime meeting place for fans, outside Busch Stadium.

"Obviously, everybody is heartbroken," current Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said at the Blues game. "There's a lot of people who will quote his stats to you, but what makes it so touching is how it affects people's lives."

Former Cardinals star Albert Pujols weighed in with a tweet: "My prayers are with the Musial family tonight. I will cherish my friendship with Stan for as long as I live. Rest in Peace."

Current Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday, too: "Sad to hear about Stan the Man, it's an honor to wear the same uniform. Prayers to the Musial family."

Many recalled Musial as the most selfless of sports heroes. Boggs was touched by Musial's enthusiasm when the pitcher cracked the major leagues in 2008.

"He was one of the best players to ever play the game, and he was very happy for me when I made my first team," Boggs said. "He was extremely kind to me. He was one of a kind."

Hall of Fame manager Whitey Herzog said Musial was a player he'd have loved to have written onto his lineup card. He said Musial's influence provided a helpful push in his election to the Hall.

"He was always great to me when I was a nobody," Herzog said. "He will always be Mr. Baseball. You can go around the world and you'll never find a better human being than Stan Musial."

Musial had been in poor health for several years and Herzog remembered a conversation at the funeral of Musial's wife, Lillian, last May in which Musial indicated he was ready for the end of his life.

"I always wanted to live to be 100," Herzog recalled Musial saying, "but I didn't want to live to be 100 like this."

All of Musial's admirers preferred to recall the long-lasting glory days.

"I never got to see him play but I saw what type of person he was and what type of impact he had in this city," Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said. "That made me realize how lucky we were to have him."

Commissioner Bud Selig said baseball lost "one of its true legends," adding that Musial had been a "Hall of Famer in every sense and a man who led a great American life."

"All of Major League Baseball mourns his passing, and we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, admirers and all the fans of the Cardinals," Selig said.

Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson said: "The mold broke with Stan. There will never be another like him."

"Stan will be remembered in baseball annals as one of the pillars of our game, with his many successes on the diamond, the passion with which he played, and his engaging personality," he said.

Blues Hall of Famer Bernie Federko commented on Musial after broadcasting the hockey team's 6-0 victory over Detroit.

"He never acted like a famous ballplayer, he just acted like a normal guy. He always had time for everyone, and he looked you in the eye," Federko said. "It's a sad day but to go at 92, it's a great life. I lost my dad last year at 92 the same way. If we all signed up for 92 years, we'd be pretty happy about it."

Few could match 'Stan the Man'

HBT: Stan Musial?s name doesn?t dot the record books anywhere near as frequently as those of Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron and Barry Bonds. Still, for consistent greatness, perhaps no one matched Stan the Man, who died Saturday at 92.

Durant scores 52 as Thunder top Mavs 117-114 in OT

DALLAS (AP) ? Kevin Durant's miserable fourth quarter ended with a final miss that gave Dallas a chance to finish a rally in overtime Friday night.

The Oklahoma City star took care of things in the extra period instead, and ended up with a career high and the first 50-point game in the NBA this season.

Durant scored 52 points, including the go-ahead basket with 16.9 seconds remaining in overtime, and the Thunder held on for a 117-114 victory that extended their winning streak to six games and ended the Mavericks' season-best run of four straight.

A night after getting voted a starter for the All-Star game, Durant missed six straight shots and was 2 of 11 from the field while the Mavericks were rallying in the fourth quarter. When Durant missed at the buzzer after O.J. Mayo's tying 3-pointer with 2.3 seconds left in regulation, he had to remind himself to keep shooting.

"In overtime, I knew if I got down on myself that I was going to put my team in a tough position to win," said Durant, whose previous career high was 51 against Denver last February. "They look at me in crunch time to come through for them. When I don't have confidence in myself, they make sure they pump me up a little."

Durant was still scoring because he couldn't miss at the free throw line. He was 19 of 19 in regulation, which he finished with 43 points.

Vince Carter, who kept the Mavericks close when Oklahoma City threatened to blow them out in the first half, had a season-high 29 points. He hit three free throws to start overtime when he was fouled on a 3-pointer, but Durant answered with a pair on the other end.

Durant went on to score nine of Oklahoma City's 12 points in overtime and had three go-ahead buckets to help the Thunder avoid losing for the first time in 28 games when leading after three quarters. The Thunder blew a 14-point lead in the second half.

"Experience has helped me a lot," said Durant, who was 13 of 31 from the field but made all 21 of his free throws and also had nine rebounds. "If I look like I'm out there panicking, my teammates will look at me and feel the same way. I've got to be cool. If I miss a shot, so be it. I'm sure opportunity will come back around sooner or later."

Dirk Nowitzki bounced back from a dreadful shooting night to score 12 in the fourth quarter, but the Mavericks couldn't get him the ball trailing by two in the final seconds of overtime. Mike James, who came in shooting less than 20 percent but had hit a go-ahead 3 earlier in the extra period, ended up with the ball well behind the arc with the shot clock dwindling. His shot barely hit the front of the rim.

Russell Westbrook, who scored 31, missed a free throw to give the Mavericks one more chance to tie, but Carter's desperation 3 at the buzzer was short.

"The play blew up and Mike ended up with it, and it was unfair to him," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said. "It was a play that didn't work, and it was my responsibility."

Nowitzki finished with 18 points after starting 1 of 11 from the field, salvaging his 10th straight double-figure game after scoring in single digits the first four games once he returned from missing 27 games due to right knee surgery.

The Mavericks had six players in double figures for the fourth straight game. Mayo had 18 points and seven assists, and Darren Collison scored 15.

Elton Brand had 10 points and 13 rebounds for Dallas, while Serge Ibaka had 11 points and 14 boards for the Thunder.

Durant, who has scored at least 40 three times in the past week, put Oklahoma City ahead 99-98 on a pair of free throws after he was fouled on a drive with 1:32 left in regulation. He hit two more after he was fouled following a rebound of a miss by Nowitzki, and Oklahoma City kept the lead until Mayo's 3-pointer with two defenders in his face forced overtime at 105-all.

"There are some things that we obviously could have done to limit him," Carlisle said of Durant. "He had a great game, and he is the best shooter on the planet."

Neither team led by more than three in the final 6 minutes of regulation and overtime.

The Mavericks, who earlier this season tied an NBA record with their 10th straight overtime loss, fell to 1-8 in overtime games this season. Two of the losses have been to the Thunder, who improved to 4-0 in overtime.

"It was one of those games no one deserved to lose," Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks said. "I'm glad we came out with the victory because that's not an easy win."

The Mavericks trailed 87-79 when Carter hit a free throw and Nowitzki had a tip-in to start a 13-2 run that gave Dallas its first lead since the first quarter. Nowitzki's free throws put the Mavericks up 90-89 with 6:41 left.

NOTES: Nowitzki was called for a technical foul during a timeout, and Thunder C Kendrick Perkins picked up one when he got in Chris Kaman's face after Perkins was called for a foul for bumping Kaman while they were battling for a rebound. ... Brand recorded the 400th double-double of his career Wednesday against Houston. He had 11 points and 10 rebounds. ... Durant will start in the All-Star game Feb. 17 in Houston. His coach, Brooks, won't be in charge. Brooks is ineligible to lead the Western Conference stars because he did it last year. "It was pretty cool to be able to meet some of the players and see how they are off the court," Brooks said. "Whoever gets it will have a great experience in a great city."

Google CEO Larry Page on Apple's "thermonuclear war": "How well is that working?"

Larry Page took over as CEO of Google in April of 2011, although insiders say that the job was always his, Eric Schmidt was simply "keeping the seat warm" until Page was ready. On the technology side of things, there wasn't much doubt the Page had the skills, but when dealing with the media, Page was a bit reserved at first. But, he's growing more confident, and in a a new interview with Wired, Page is ready to take swings at Facebook. He even commented on Apple's "thermonuclear war" with a confident and clear "How well is that working?".

The key to the interview was that Page really set out his world view. Page's number one concern is simple: always shoot for the moon, both with innovation and in business, because each should feed the other. Page mentioned inventors like Tesla who never saw the success they deserved because they didn't focus on making inventions businesses. Once that balance is struck, it's a matter of keeping up the rate of innovation.?

Page is critical of the status quo in business, saying:

His aim isn't to improve by 10%, but by a factor of 10, which brings a new meaning to Google X, and to not be scared to push into new products. He even took a shot at Apple on this front, saying, "Apple only does a very, very small number of things, and that?s working pretty well for them. But I find that unsatisfying."

This view is what helped push Google into various markets like webmail, social, and mobile. Although, while Page repeated his worry about moving into webmail, the decision to purchase Android was a relatively easy one apparently. Mostly, because Page was very unimpressed with the market as it stood, which at the time was dominated by BlackBerry, Symbian, and Windows Mobile:

But, Page's push for Android to be better doesn't stop with software. He reiterated that Motorola is going to be run separately, but promised innovation from that company. The pace of that innovation did somewhat show that Page is disconnected from that division, because he referenced that in "the next 5 to 10 years" we will see a change away from smartphones that use easily broken glass. Motorola CEO?Dennis Woodside should probably have told Larry that the flexible display change will be starting this year.?

Page is obviously very optimistic about the work being done at Google, and he even saw a bright side to the Apple Maps fiasco, and Google Maps being removed from iOS. In his estimation, be fallout from the Apple Maps mess has helped "people realize that we?ve put a lot of effort and investment into" maps. And, Page doesn't want to hear from people who think the company shouldn't have built a Google Maps app for iOS, saying:

Of course, Page didn't comment on the company's support for Windows products, but we'll assume that omission would be because Windows Phone won't add much to the "as many people as possible" side of things. ?

Larry Page has a very unique skill for a CEO: he doesn't let pleasing stockholders scare him away from pushing the company forward, and pushing at a hard rate. Where Page says that "incremental improvement is guaranteed to be obsolete over time", most CEOs see incremental improvement as the easiest way to hold their position as long as possible. Given that Page was always assumed to eventually be the CEO of Google, maybe he doesn't have to worry about losing that position. But for now, it is suiting him extremely well, and we're excited to see what Google brings in the years to come.?

Armstrong's answers 'unexpected'

Talk show host Oprah Winfrey has said Lance Armstrong "did not come clean in the way I expected" about claims he used performance-enhancing drugs.

She said she was "mesmerised and riveted" by what the former cyclist, who has been stripped of his seven Tour de France titles, had to say during their two-and-a-half hour interview.

She said she would leave it to others to decide whether he was contrite.

Armstrong, 41, has vehemently denied he took drugs during his cycling career.

He was accused last year by the US Anti-Doping Agency (Usada) of what it called "the most sophisticated, professionalised and successful doping programme" the sport had ever seen.

He is now said to be discussing whether to testify against sport officials.

'Very emotional'

Ms Winfrey told CBS that the interview in his home town of Austin, Texas, was so lengthy that it would be broadcast over two nights, starting on Thursday.

She said she had prepared well and took 112 questions into her interview with him, most of which she got to ask.

Lance could have a positive impact if he tells the truth on everything. He's got to be completely honest?

End Quote Betsy Andreu Armstrong accuser and wife of former teammate

She said he was "serious and thoughtful", had prepared well for the interview, and "met the moment".

"I would say he did not come clean in the manner that I expected," she told CBS, without giving details. "It was surprising to me. I would say that for myself, my team, all of us in the room, we were mesmerised and riveted by some of his answers."

Ms Winfrey told CBS that she had agreed with Lance Armstrong and his team that they would not talk about what had been said until the broadcast.

"By the time I left Austin and landed in Chicago, you all had already confirmed it. So I'm like - how did you all do that? We all agreed that we weren't going to say anything," she said.

"I'm sitting here now because it's already been confirmed."

The interview was made just hours after Armstrong apologised to staff at the Livestrong Foundation but stopped short of a full admission of guilt.

Betsy Andreu, wife of former Armstrong teammate Frankie Andreu, was one of the first people to publicly accuse Armstrong of doping.

She told AP news of Armstrong's confession was "very emotional and very sad".

She added: "He used to be one of my husband's best friends and because he wouldn't go along with the doping, he got kicked to the side.

"Lance could have a positive impact if he tells the truth on everything. He's got to be completely honest."

Nicole Cooke: "Lance robbed people of their dreams"

Armstrong was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles, lost most of his sponsorships and was forced to leave Livestrong after the damning Usada report.

Admitting doping might be a first step into trying to mitigate his lifetime ban from competition. He is also said to be planning to testify against powerful individuals in the world of cycling - though not other cyclists - he will claim knew about or facilitated the doping, sources said.

But his admission of guilt would raise legal issues as well as further backlash from the cycling world and cancer community, in which Armstrong is a prominent figure as a cancer survivor.

The New York Times has reported Armstrong's supporters are concerned he could face perjury charges if he confesses to using performance-enhancing drugs, because he testified in a 2005 court case that he had never done so.

Former teammate Floyd Landis - who was stripped of his 2006 Tour de France title for doping - has filed a federal whistleblower lawsuit accusing Armstrong of defrauding the US Postal Service, which sponsored the team to the tune of more than $30m (?18.7m).

The US Department of Justice is considering whether to join the lawsuit against him, reports say, and Armstrong's lawyers are said to be in negotiations to settle the suit.

The UK's Sunday Times is already suing Armstrong for up to $1.6m over a libel payment to him in 2004 after the newspaper alleged he had cheated.

And a Texan insurance company is pursuing Armstrong for $11m over insured performance bonuses paid to the American after he claimed his fourth, fifth and sixth Tour de France victories.

Major crude oil facility planned

By Kabeer Yousuf ? MUSCAT ? Oman Oil Company (OOC) in partnership with Takamul Investment Company (Takamul), has established a new company named Oman Tank Terminal Company (OTTCO) to build, own and operate a 200 million barrel oil terminal in Ras Markaz in the Governorate of Al Wusta. OTTCO will be owned 90 per cent by OOC and 10 per cent by Takamul. A Memorandum of Understanding to this effect was signed at the Ministry of Oil and Gas here yesterday.

The new terminal is set to be the largest crude storage terminal in the Middle East region. The strategic location of the terminal serves as a solid ground for Ras Markaz to emerge as an important global hub for oil storage. The MOU includes strategic plans to develop storage capacity for Oman crude. The crude oil will be stored at Ras Markaz Terminal prior to exporting to the international market.

Dr Mohammed bin Hamad al Rumhy, Minister of Oil and Gas said, ?The construction of a crude oil pipeline between Nahada and Ras Markaz, for the export of Oman Crude Oil Blend, is of strategic importance. The terminal will further boost the export of Oman Blend and increase the reliability of crude supply to the market. The continuous flow and availability of Oman Blend in combination with a large crude oil storage capacity will attract other parties interested in strategic and commercial storage, distribution and blending of crude oil.?

The big size and geographic location provides an excellent opportunity for the terminal to emerge as a major hub in the Middle East for storage and export, like Singapore in Asia and Rotterdam in Europe. The terminal will be built in phases, and Phase-1 is expected to be operational by 2017. Meanwhile, Oil and Gas Ministry Under-Secretary Nasser bin Khamis al Jashmi, who is also Chairman of OOC, said, ?The development of this world-scale crude oil terminal will be of strategic importance, not only for Oman, but for the whole Middle East and the Asian region.?

Presently, it is estimated that around 42 per cent of the global trade in oil passes through the Strait of Hormuz and it is projected to increase to 50 per cent in the next 20 years. This terminal in Ras Markaz will serve as the second delivery point for Oman crude after Mina Al Fahal. The increase in storage volumes and the additional delivery point will have a positive impact on the trading of Oman Blend.

The terminal will serve strategic and commercial storage requirements for various customers including the Refinery at Duqm and will also provide blending facilities for crude. The terminal will provide and operate different tank sizes, with a storage capacity of 755 kbbl, 1mbbl and 1,75 mbbl each. ? ONA
