Pay tax dues by 31 March or face action: I-T dept to defaulters ...

New Delhi: Warning the defaulters of penal consequences, the Income Tax Department today asked assesses, who pay taxes on the basis of self-assessment, to clear their dues by March 31.

The Revenue Department said 73,388 people have defaulted on payments of self-assessment tax aggregating to Rs 3,859 crore. ?Filing a return without paying the admitted amount of tax that is payable will render such taxpayer an ?assessee in default? under the provisions of the I-T Act.

Such taxpayers who default in payment of self-assessment tax may invite penal consequences,? the Finance Ministry said in a statement. ?Income-tax Department urges all taxpayers who have filed their returns in the current financial year and have defaulted on payment of self-assessment tax, to immediately come forward and pay the due taxes before March 31, 2013,? it said.

It further said that in future the tax arrears, in case of self assessment, should be cleared along with the filing of return. The revenue department is plugging each and every source of revenue to achieve the Rs 5.65 lakh crore mop up target under the direct taxes category for this fiscal, which will end on March 31.

To check tax evasion, the government has already sent 35,000 notices to tax payers who are not filing returns and a similar number of notices are in process of being issued.

Paying to lose vs. investing in the future!

sportvu

A lot of the articles coming out about the recent Sloan Sports Analytics Conference ? a conference that was attended by our own Andres Alvarez and Arturo Galletti ? have focused on the SportVU tracking system. Using a system of cameras, SportVU tracks the position of the ball and all active players throughout the game. The data could be used to track the locations of on-court events ? shots, rebounds, assists, steals, turnovers, and blocks ? or learn about player movement, or field goal defense, or a myriad of other things. While the sample sizes are small for now, there is great promise that SportVU can contribute to the statistical analysis of basketball.

The number of teams electing to install SportVU increases every year. Right now exactly half of the league?s 30 teams have not installed SportsVU. The system currently costs between $75 000 ? $100 000 per year. That got us thinking: how does the cost of SportVU compare to some of the salaries that these non-SportVU teams pay? Below are salaries of 15 players ? one from each of the 15 non-SportVU teams ? as well as the number of years of SportVU each player?s 2012-13 salary would cover:

These 15 teams are paying these players a combined $21.2 million dollars this year, which would cover about 247.5 years of SportVU. And how much on court productivity are these teams getting from these 15 players? A paltry 1076 minutes played and a pathetic -1.4 wins ? not quite as bad as Norris Cole or Glen Davis, but close. I?ve put together two visualizations to illustrate how ridiculous this is:

Our 15 players are paid a combined total of $21.2 million, which is a more salary than every individual NBA player not named Kobe. Despite the money going to these players, they?ve only played 1076 combined minutes this year. This is way fewer minutes than Kobe, who is the current NBA leader; the same number of minutes as Keith Bogans; and?fewer minutes than Jeff Taylor, who is apparently an NBA player who plays on the Bobcats. Which should tell you how much of an impact these players have had this year.

You?ll REALLY have to squint to see the little yellow dot on the left. We assure you it?s there!

Instead of using that $21.2 million to pay for 1076 NBA minutes, these teams could install SportVU and pay for 2,676,049 minutes of SportVU. Another way to think of it is 16.5 years (including playoffs) of SportsVU for each of these 15 teams ? a period of time longer than the Hall-Of-Fame careers of Larry Bird (13 years), Magic Johnson (13 years), and Michael Jordan (15, if you count the last two in Washington).

Instead of signing creaky veterans like Jerry Stackhouse and Grant Hill, or adding that ever-important 13th man at the minimum, these teams could be gathering data that might give them a competitive edge. While the full benefit of SportVU on a team?s wins has yet to be cracked, surely it would be greater than that of players who usually sit on the bench (and who tend to hurt their teams? productivity when they do play). One thing?s for certain, though: it would definitely be cheaper. In addition to costing less per season, money going to SportVU has the added bonus of not counting against the salary cap or luxury tax line.

- Devin

Editor Dre: One last note. At bare minimum installing SportsVU would increase stats to give to hardcore fans. This is something most of us want. I?m fairly certain that pleasing some of your fanbase, even a very tiny segment, is a better investment than paying players to sit or lose

Read This Now About Your Travel Destination Before You Leave ...

Traveling can be such an exhausting experience. So exhaustive that sometimes when we return home, we are glad to get back to normal life. But leading up to a trip can be fun and exciting, filled with a little anticipation and a whole lot of preparation. Here are some things to consider when you are planning on taking your next trip.

Make sure you plan out your traveling ahead of time by checking the weather. You don't want to travel on a vacation to somewhere where the weather is not favorable. Choosing what season to explore a city is crucial to taking in the true experience that particular city has to offer.

When packing your bags for a trip on an airplane, always remember 3-1-1. Regulations now limit the amount of liquids and gels passengers can have in their carry on luggage. When you take your bag through security, they will make sure you only have your travel-size toiletries which are less than three ounces and fit into a one quart zip top bag and only one bag per passenger.

To pack light while traveling, make time to plan ahead. Lay articles of clothing out before you pack, and make sure that each top can go with more than one bottom. Bring clothes that are comfortable and easy to wash, in case you need to do laundry on the road. Think carefully about the shoes you bring. It is best to wear your bulkiest items on the flight, to make more room in your luggage.

Ditch the fanny pack. Not only do you look the part of a tourist, a fanny pack is often easy pickings for a thief. If you crave the convenience of the fanny pack, consider getting a multi-pocket travel vest instead. These carry just as much but keep the items close to your body where they are safer.

When packing for a cruise, be sure to bring along a pair of slip-resistant rubber soled shoes. These will work when you are walking across wet, slippery decks, as well as for most of your shore excursions. The fewer pairs of shoes you can bring, the easier your luggage will be to store.

Traveling light can make the difference is a great vacation and a tortuous experience. Think about it. If you don't take it with you can almost always buy it there. There are exceptions of course but even with those just a little bit of thought while packing can greatly reduce your load and make your trip much more enjoyable.

Be very careful of sending text messages while traveling. While roaming charges within your home country are becoming less common, do not make the mistake of assuming your 'unlimited texting' plan is valid abroad and check with your phone company. Many travelers have come home from vacation to find an unexpectedly large phone bill waiting for them due to overseas usage fees.

If you must pack an expensive jewelry piece when traveling, keep it in the hotel safe when you reach your destination. Only remove the piece to wear it for a special occasion. Also make sure the piece is insured. This will provide you with valuable security and peace of mind.

Know the common emergency phrases and contacts for the place where you are traveling. If you are traveling abroad, you want to know how to communicate an emergency, even if all you can say is "emergency." You also want to know that you have the best contact for any emergencies that you may encounter, so you aren't caught off guard. If you know who to call and how to communicate with them, you can feel much safer and at ease during your trip.

Making sure you apply as much of the knowledge you learned in this article is key to traveling with success. A good thing to keep in mind is that this article alone isn't going to give you all of the information you need to know, keep on the look out for new tips so you can travel with ease in the future.
