Apple patents Siri-like system for controlling cameras, PMPs through a computer or smartphone

Image
"Siri, turn on the flash and take three pictures with my camera after waiting two seconds." Apple's intelligent voice control system has been wildly popular amongst consumers in the U.S., and abroad, but Siri could be making her way to other devices in the future, including iPods, cameras and other consumer electronics. "Okay, Rock God, I will take your picture in two, one..." A patent by Apple filed in 2010 but published today describes a scenario in which you could control a secondary electronic device using your voice, with all of the backend processing passing through a connected smartphone or computer. According to the patent:

One embodiment may include a first electronic device communicatively coupled to a server and to a second electronic device. The second electronic device may be a portable electronic device, such as a digital media player, that includes a voice user interface. The second electronic device may be capable of accurate speech recognition, but may not include additional computation hardware and/or software for training the speech recognition engine. As such, the bulk, weigh, and cost for manufacturing the second electronic device may be reduced, resulting in a more portable and affordable product.

In other words, you could have Siri-like control of virtually any device, with all of the required hardware and software residing on an iPhone or MacBook, linked with other devices over WiFi or Bluetooth. Voice control wouldn't be practical in all situations, but it could be enormously helpful for certain operations, like adjusting settings or reviewing images. Instead of scrolling through hundreds of images, you could simply say "Siri, show me pictures from last Thursday," and see exactly the shots you were searching for. As always, this is one of thousands of Apple patents, and it quite possibly may never come to fruition as described. But here's to hoping it will. "Siri, show our readers the patent application" -- you'll find it at the source link below.

Internet Marketing for Small Businesses Has Moved On. Don't Get ...

Anyone who?s been involved in internet marketing for small businesses over the last few years will have been excited about the huge array of opportunities available for attracting customers. From Pay per Click advertising, Blogging, search engine marketing, online advertising, email marketing and of course social media, the number of internet marketing strategies at a Marketer?s disposal is staggering.

With those changes, technology has also given the ability to the end user to take more time to learn, compare and contrast similar offerings online and more importantly with the people they know and trust.

The most profitable small businesses are no longer the ones with most advertising dollars (although that does help!). They are the ones who can build and manage online communities that turn consumers into brand evangelists for their companies? experience.

If you want your business to be at the forefront of these changes then read these;

1. Inbound Marketing Rules

internet marketing for small businesses - inbound marketing

Tim Berners Lee designed the internet as a global information sharing platform ? a communications tool.

Traditionally, internet marketing for small businesses was based on the assumption that Companies were the main source of information about their brand and that potential customers could be attracted by advertising and direct marketing; this is known as outbound marketing.

The Internet and social media has changed that, because consumers in general are now so bombarded by advertising messages they have become more adept at filtering out everything except what interests them the most. This is where attraction marketing comes in to its own, if you can engage people?s interest with your marketing, and then they will come to you.

2. Build Trust

internet marketing for small businesses -build trust

Big, Bold, Brash headlines are par for the course on the internet. With millions and millions of competing websites you have to make your small business website or blog stand out from the crowd.

However once you have grabbed that person?s attention it is not about moving in for the kill and hitting them over the head with sales message after sales message. It is about providing compelling content that keep the reader engaged and hungry for more.

Credibility goes hand in hand with trust if your content is over the top and full of hype you will lose the respect of your audience and they will not come back.

3. Develop Mutually Beneficial Relationships

internet marketing for small businesses - muttualy beneficial relationship

Online marketing for small business is not just about building strong customer relationships it is also about building relationships with other marketers and business owners. Why? Because the more relationships you develop the greater the chance you have of your content being shared far and wide across the internet. The more eyeballs will see the content and the greater the chance you have of potential clients finding your business.

It is not necessarily what you know, it is who you know. Find a group of likeminded individuals such as business owners or entrepreneurs who share the same values as you and offer to share their content in exchange for the same treatment.

Think of it like traditional word of mouth marketing; if you mention someone else to someone you know then because of the bond that person has with you, they spend a little more time reviewing that business then they would normally. Likewise the same will happen when that business owner shares your work.

4. Earn Social Proof

Google, Facebook and HubPage?s have different ranking algorithms that determine how credible the content you share is. For example if you go to Facebook and share one piece of content a day and don?t do anything else, no comments, no likes, no videos, then in the eyes of Facebook you are not participating, you will not have a high authority accredited to you and you will have little to no social proof. Meaning your content will only be visible to a small portion of users.

Google?s search algorithm updates in 2012 and moving forward are about tailoring the results based on social proof. The more people that are talking about, sharing and discussing your online content, the more social proof you have and therefore your content will be deemed more valuable.

To learn more read this post Social Media for Small Business ? Less of the Marketing More of the Social

To get that social proof you need to work hard to produce top quality content that warrants being shared. Not only that, you also need to take the time to share other people?s content.

5. Concentrate on Conversion Optimization.

internet marketing for small businesses - conversion optimization

Many business owners wrongly assume that internet marketing for small businesses is all about getting your products or services in front of the eyes of new customers.

Driving lead generation as a large part of it but it is not the be all and end all. Internet marketing is about providing an experience for both new and existing customers. Existing customers already trust you; they have already put their hands into their wallets and invested in your experience. What is stopping you making them buy again and again and again?

It is far better to have 20% of 100 people visiting your site making a purchase or taking the next step in the sales cycle than 1% of 1,000 people. Why inadvertently waste resource on the 900 people who aren?t interested, when you could be focussing that resource on delivering results from 100 people.

Internet marketing for small businesses is maturing, it is becoming more and more like traditional business where relationships and customer experience count toward ongoing success. If your business is not willing to accept that Internet marketing is about communication, listening and sharing, then you may well find that you simply get left behind.

Nadya Suleman -- better known as Octomom, for giving birth to eight babies at once -- is doing whatever she needs to do to keep her family afloat, even if that means posing nude. The mother of 14 has gone topless (though tastefully covered) for a photo shoot in the U.K. magazine Closer. Leah Minnick retires after 35 years | The Seminole Tribune

By Rachel Buxton

BRIGHTON ? After 35 years of dedicated work with the Seminole Tribe, Brighton?s Director of Elder Services Leah Minnick retired on Feb. 24.

Family, friends and community members came together to honor and congratulate Minnick during a retirement party held at the Senior Center on March 1.

?I didn?t want nothing,? Minnick said. ?I told them I just want to walk out that door quietly.?

However, her staff and her elders were not going to let that happen.

Minnick began working for the Seminole Tribe and the department, called Hot Meals at the time, on Nov. 17, 1976.

?I had been working outside in Okeechobee, raising my kids there, and somebody told me there was a job open if I wanted to come work for the Tribe,? she said. ?It was with the clinic. So I applied for it.?

She traveled all the way to Hollywood to interview for the position. Although she didn?t land the position she originally wanted, as she was leaving her interview, then director of Hot Meals Lottie Herald chased her down and offered her a job on the spot as an assistant cook for Hot Meals.

?She came running after me when I was fixing to leave and said, ?Leah, I was hoping they wouldn?t give you the job because I got a job for you at the Hot Meals and, if you want it, you can start right away.? I said OK, and I?ve been there ever since,? Minnick said.

After four years of promotions within the department, Minnick became the director.

She said at that time, Hot Meals mainly fed the elders. During her 35 years, she slowly added programs and events to the department.

?Time changed, things changed,? she said.

As director, Minnick organized trips, bowling and horseshoe tournaments, holiday parties and anything else that added fun and adventure to the Department of Elder Services.

Minnick loved making it possible for the elders to experience things off the reservation and to see things they didn?t know existed. Minnick said their trip to Alaska stands out above the others.

?That was the best trip ever,? she said. ?Happy Jones went on that trip to Alaska and just couldn?t get over some of the things she saw.?

Time quickly passed, and, before Minnick knew it, she had spent her entire career at the Department of Elder Services.

?It got to the point where my oldest daughter said, ?Mom, when are you going to retire? I don?t want to come in there when you?re still the director,?? Minnick laughed. ?She turns 55 in August, so I got out just in time.?

Minnick said she?s going to miss her staff and planning activities, but she?s looking forward to just being a senior. Thanks to Minnick?s hard work and persistence in getting the new Senior Center in Brighton, she will get to fully enjoy it.

She admitted that she?s still adjusting to retirement, but she has plenty to keep her busy, including straightening up her house and taking care of her cows.

Minnick also plans to take up sewing. Her mother was a seamstress and said she never learned to sew because she was busy working and raising her kids. Now that she will have the time, she would like to finally learn.

?It?s never too late,? she said.

While Minnick never thought she would spend her entire career in one place, she said things happen for a reason and that she must have been meant for the Senior Center.

She only has one regret.

?I should have kept a journal because I could have wrote a book?it would have been funny,? Minnick laughed. ?I had a lot of fun.?

Reluctant Russia wakes up to energy waste

MOSCOW (Reuters) - The world's top oil and gas producer may be watching its energy riches blow away in the wind. Russia, in 2008, was wasting enough energy to power Britain for a whole year.

It was then that President Dmitry Medvedev set a target to reduce energy intensity, a rate of waste measure, by 40 percent by 2020. Russian companies were 10 to 20 times less energy efficient than their foreign rivals, he said.

Not enough has changed since Soviet times, critics say, and wide-open windows remain a typical way of cooling overheated housing blocks. Even today around one-fifth of Russian boilers date back to the era of cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin's space flight in 1961, or earlier.

"We are two and half times less energy efficient than other comparative modern countries in Europe," said Vasily Belov, head of the energy efficiency cluster at the Skolkovo Foundation, a government-sponsored science park.

Raw economics, not environmental qualms, have won the energy efficiency drive powerful backing from President-elect Vladimir Putin to the monolithic oil and gas companies.

But progress grinds against grass roots skepticism and entrenched attitudes.

High-rise apartment blocks, and other buildings, absorb the biggest share of Russia's energy - around 35 percent. Industry follows with 29 percent and transport, 21 percent.

In one such block sits Denis Platonov, a 31-year old Muscovite and married father of two, warily watching his electricity meter.

Before heat and power even arrives in the Platonov's apartment, a large amount is wasted - 30 percent of heat and 11 percent of electricity is lost in transmission.

The potential energy-saving boon of combined heat and power systems, common in Russian apartments, is nullified by 200,000 km of ageing heat-supply pipes and decrepit equipment.

The Platonovs' meter is a rarity in Russian flats, but something that could be commonplace if an energy-savings law is implemented scrupulously. They look at their bill with suspicion.

"It's rather difficult to look at this paper and understand how much energy we consumed, because these are just assumptions," said Platonov, a sales representative for a software company.

"There are a lot of mistakes, sometimes it seems like that the managing company is trying to cheat you."

"I'm not going to agree to pay twice as much for energy-saving appliances because I am not sure that they will help me to save energy - if you compare the expenditure with the benefits, it is unreasonable."

Valery Sajenkov is vice president of Schneider Electric Russia, a French company that is seeing growing demand for its energy-efficiency devices in Russia.

"The most difficult task is to transform public awareness on an everyday level," he said. "Here there is a need for definite measures in schools, university - education and upbringing - to orientate people towards energy efficiency."

The first steps have been taken, such as smart energy bills showing different tariffs, allowing consumers to run appliances more cheaply at night, he said.

But for a public keen to give shining new toys a spin after decades of empty shops and drab interiors, thrift can be hard.

"During the Soviet Union we had a lot of problems buying a new refrigerator, buying a new washing machine," said Maxim Titov of the World Bank's International Finance Corporation (IFC).

"If you talk to a guy in Siberia, he will tell you: ?for 20 years I was dreaming of buying a four-wheel drive. I will do it. I will not buy a bicycle.'"

BIG COMPANIES

Upgrading Russia to decent energy efficiency standards would cost $320 billion, but this could pay for itself in four years, according to the IFC's calculations.

It is vital if Russia is to avoid economic stagnation by the middle of the century, as fossil fuel reserves go into decline, said Igor Bashmakov, director of the Centre for Energy Efficiency in Moscow.

He expected oil production to start declining before 2020 and gas after 2040.

"Energy efficiency is a real key to survival," Bashmakov said.

Newly-elected President Putin included the development of energy-saving goods, as well as more energy saving in private homes, in his manifesto.

Energy efficiency does not seem to have riled Russia's powerful oil and gas industries, compared to efforts to promote renewable power which have run into resistance from the oil lobby.

Titov, program manager for sustainable energy finance at the IFC, argued that Russia's sprawling energy industry, which faces rising costs to tap new resources and keep the oil and gas flowing, stands to gain from a reduction in domestic consumption.

"I think (abundance of resources) was a reason initially why we were not concerned. But now I see that this is changing. If we decrease our energy consumption, here in Russia, we can export more," he said.

Oil and gas giant Gazprom plans to spend 1.75 trillion roubles in 2013, as it seeks to boost gas production, to compensate for long-term decline in its giant, low-cost gas fields in western Siberia.

Energy saving may seem uncontroversial, but results are slow to appear.

"Everything that has been planned is happening, but rather slowly and on a small scale and very strongly varies from region to region," said Alexei Kokorin, head of climate and energy at WWF Russia.

Some areas have been fast movers - the Rostovskaya region cut energy use in public buildings by 11 percent (10.7) a decade ago, when it installed hundreds of heat, water, gas and electricity meters. While similar success stories can be found, Russia faces a shortage of experts to develop and implement legislation, said Bashmakov of the IFC.

Add to that the consequences of the 2009 economic downturn, which pushed up the energy intensity of the economy, because big energy consumers, such as oil and gas companies, were less affected by the recession than their lower-consuming cousins in manufacturing.

"We are lagging behind this target to reduce energy intensity by 40 percent by 2020 due to the two years, which we lost during the crisis," Bashmakov said.

The International Energy Agency reckons that Russia will not hit its 40 percent goal until 2028 - eight years' later than intended.

Companies, rather than private households, have been more attuned to energy saving. Rising energy costs have sharpened the incentives for industrial users to watch the meter, while householders are shielded to some extent by government-controlled electricity tariffs and (in the run-up to elections) caps on petrol prices.

"The excuse of low energy prices has to a large extent gone away. So all the signals to save energy are there," said Peter Hobson, senior banker at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

"The main constraint is that it is not in the culture to try and reduce consumption, it's just not what people are focusing their efforts on," Hobson said.

A firm with spare capital is more likely "to spend it on increasing production and trying to build new markets than they are on something boring like energy efficiency."

That is a view that finds echoes in the micro economy of Denis Platonov's Moscow apartment.

How will he react if the government bans energy-wasting incandescent light bulbs, as in the European Union?

"I will leave this country," he says, without smiling.

Why Branding by Rebecca Servoss | Ideal Life Vision

WHY BRANDING?

Is your business attracting your ideal clients?? Are you spending time & money on marketing, but not seeing many great results?? Your business? branding can be largely to blame.? When a business has impeccable branding in place, its target audience can?t resist but interact with the business.

Online, businesses only have 1-3 seconds to connect with viewers on their sites and blogs before they choose to click away. If the branding doesn?t represent the business in a high-quality, effective way, that business may actually be repelling their ideal target audience.

Powerful brand identities establish credibility and encourage trust between businesses and consumers. When your business? brand identity reflects your personality and the passion that drives you to create solutions for the world, your target audience can?t help but flock to you.

DOES YOUR BRANDING RUB YOU THE WRONG WAY?

?There?s no way around it ? being out of sync with yourself sucks.? The wrong words or environment or packaging can feel like an itchy blanket on your truly tender spirit ? warm for a minute but incredibly irritating after a while.? When you are adrift from your core, the space between your surface and your depth fills up with anxiety.? Too much time away from your inner home leads to homesickness.? ? ? ? Style Statement, pg. 45

Too many business? brands are ?out of sync? with whom they truly are and the specific people they are looking to assist with amazing products and services.? Just like the girls in Style Statement said above, when your brand identity is adrift from your core, it?s like an itchy blanket.? Your logo, website, business cards and tag lines may get you by, but after a while you may find yourself hesitating to give out your marketing materials at networking events because your current branding doesn?t reflect you at all.

Each of us has our own unique style, even if we don?t realize it.? There are colors that make one person?s heart sing, while another person can?t stand the sight of them.? Our clothing, home decorating and business styles are purely individual.? Even if your style reflects common elements found in many other people?s style, the way YOU put it all together is completely original.

YOUR IRRESISTIBLE BRAND

Creating an irresistible brand isn?t just a nice idea.? In our current market, having an irresistible brand identity is a must for a business? survival.

Every business has less than 30 seconds for an online visitor to decide whether or not they will stay on or leave their website.? Impeccable branding attracts online visitors to stay around.? Less-than-attractive branding can lead people clicking away faster than most anything else.

It has been said that a business must ?evolve or die.?? Along these same lines, we?d add that a brand must also evolve their brand or die.? Understanding that people buy from people, businesses must ensure that their brand represents the people behind the business, while also appealing to their unique target market.? While businesses may have been able to get by without enticing brand identities before, those days are fading quickly.

With climate change, US could face risk from Chagas disease

ScienceDaily (Mar. 15, 2012) ? In the spring of 1835, Charles Darwin was bitten in Argentina by a "great wingless black bug," he wrote in his diary.

"It is most disgusting to feel soft wingless insects, about an inch long, crawling over one's body," Darwin wrote, "before sucking they are quite thin, but afterwards round & bloated with blood."

In all likelihood, Darwin's nighttime visitor was a member of Reduviid family of insects -- the so-called kissing bugs because of their habit of biting people around the mouth while they sleep.

From this attack, some infectious disease experts have speculated, the famed naturalist might have contracted Chagas disease, a parasite-borne illness carried by kissing bugs, that today afflicts millions of people in Central and South America. Darwin's bite may have led, ultimately, to his death from heart problems.

This hypothesis has been contested for decades, but if Darwin had experienced this bug attack in the United States, no one would have made such a speculation, since Chagas disease is almost unheard of in the U.S.

That could change, new research shows.

Lori Stevens, a biologist at the University of Vermont, and her colleagues, found that 38 percent of the kissing bugs they collected in Arizona and California contained human blood.

This upends the previous understanding of insect experts and doctors that the eleven species of kissing bugs that occur in the US don't regularly feed on people.

"This finding was totally unexpected," says Dr. Stephen Klotz, head of the infectious diseases department at the University of Arizona medical school and a co-author on the study.

And more than 50 percent of the bugs the research team collected also carried Trypanosoma cruzi, the parasite that causes Chagas disease.

Their study is reported in the March 14 online edition of the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases.

"The basic message is that the bug is out there, and it's feeding on humans, and carries the parasite," says Stevens, "so there may be greater potential for humans to have the disease in the United States than previously thought."

A quiet killer

So far, little of that potential has been realized. Only seven cases of Chagas disease transmitted by kissing bugs have been documented in the United States.

"We think the actual transmission is higher than the seven cases we have identified," says Patricia Dorn, an expert on Chagas disease at Loyola University and co-author on the new study, "but, even with these findings, we think the transmission of Chagas -- of the T. cruzi parasite -- is still very low in the US."

But with a warming climate that rate might rise.

Dorn and Klotz both emphasize that risk of severe allergic reactions to the bug's saliva is currently a greater problem than contracting Chagas disease. The team hopes their new work will "raise awareness among physicians and health care workers," Dorn says, about the risks of both allergic reactions and Chagas disease from kissing bugs.

"Chagas is a cryptic disease. It doesn't announce itself," say's UVM's Lori Stevens. The parasite can trigger an acute phase of the disease that may have no symptoms or may include fever, swelling of one eye, swelling around the bite and general ill feelings. In other words, it can look like many other minor illnesses.

Then the disease often goes into remission, only to appear years later as much more serious illness, including life-threatening digestive and heart problems. Some eight to ten million people in Mexico, Central America and South America have Chagas disease -- making it the "most infectious parasitical disease in the Americas," Stevens says. But it is one of world's most neglected tropical diseases, mostly affecting the rural poor, and little studied compared to other major diseases.

It's not fully clear why Chagas disease hasn't established itself in the United States. "There are two leading theories," Klotz says. One is that housing stock in Central America is different than in the United States. There, thatched roofs, stick and mud construction and dirt floors provide good habitat for local kissing bug species. In contrast, U.S. houses tend to have concrete basements, screened doors and windows, and tighter construction.

The other reason may have to with the bathroom behavior of different species of kissing bugs. "We like to joke the bugs have better manners in the U.S.," says Dorn. The primary method of transmitting the disease is through the insect's feces. The species that have made Chagas endemic to Central and South America tend to defecate while they are having their blood meal.

This fecal matter can then enter the bite wound or mucus membranes easily, transmitting T. cruzi parasite to the blood stream. In contrast, North American species "tend to feed, leave the host, and then defecate later," says Dorn, lowering the risk of transmission.

In a warmer world

But could those more-dangerous kissing bug species move north as the climate warms?

"Absolutely," says Dorn.

"We know the bugs are already across the bottom two-thirds of the U.S., so the bugs are here, the parasites are here. Very likely with climate change they will shift further north and the range of some species will extend," she says.

This problem may be compounded by increasing numbers of houses in the U.S. being built in remote areas -- such as the mountainous areas around southwest cities like Tucson and San Diego -- "places inhabited by packrats, for example, that are the natural hosts of these bugs," says Klotz.

"The bugs are attracted by the lights at night," Klotz says. "They'll crawl under a door and once they are there, they are such incredible parasitical bugs -- they'll come find you or your pets."

But prevention is fairly easy, Stevens says. "If you're camping, make sure you close in spaces at night," she says. "In Vermont, it's not such a big deal, but in Arizona, if you sleep with the windows open, you need to put screens in. If you take precautions to keep the bugs out, you can prevent getting the infection quite easily," she says.

A new method

Stevens and her team were able to make these findings with a novel technique for identifying DNA from any vertebrate animal, including human, -- that they found in the bugs' abdomens.

First Klotz and others collected the bugs. Then Dorn, and her students at Loyola, chopped off the distal end of their abdomens and extracted all the types of DNA, she says. Then they amplified "the parasite DNA out of the whole mess of DNA -- including the bug's, what they've been feeding on and the parasite's," Dorn says.

This allowed the team to know which of the insects were carrying the parasite.

Then this total-DNA package was shipped to Vermont, where Stevens, a professor in the biology department, and her students, developed a new technique to amplify and clone the DNA of the insect's blood meals.

"If the bug fed on humans three months ago, the DNA is pretty degraded by the time you try to detect it," says Dorn. But with a novel application of certain primers, the UVM team was able to detect any vertebrate DNA present in the bug's abdomen -- even short strands of human DNA, including one case where they were able to show that one of the bugs had fed on two different humans.

The method is expensive and labor intensive, which is why the new study only presents results from thirteen insects, but the method "may be especially useful for detecting unpredicted blood meal sources and multiple blood meals," the researchers write.

Now the team would like to look at a larger sample of kissing bugs from more areas of the United States.

"Chagas isn't going to spread fast," says Stevens, "but it could spread. Finding out how prevalent it is now would be a good idea."

7 Tips on Getting the Right Flood Insurance | NCAPS Online

1. Assess your Home?s Risk
A nation wide insurance company stated that one third of the flood claims they get come from homes not in a flood prone area. It?s important to consider your real risk for a flood of any kind, and how high if a risk it is. Depending on your homes propensity to flood, the policy you choose should adjust to it accordingly. You can go to the governments flood site, FloodSmart.com, to get a better idea of your homes risk for flooding as well as some estimates for price ranges you should be expecting.

2. Don?t Wait
It takes awhile to finalize the process of getting flood insurance, and if a flood occurs during that process it?s not likely that you will receive coverage. If you are considering this type of insurance, then make sure you plan to purchase it well before flood or even rain season. Unfortunately, the majority of homes in Louisiana had no flood insurance during hurricane Katrina, and government handouts only go so far.

3. Educate Yourself on Limits
Before signing anything, make sure you know your home well and they type of flood damage it could incur. Then carefully evaluate your flood insurance proposal and make sure you are fully covered for any and every area of concern. While some insurance companies have limits to the amount they?ll refund you for damages, some will cover your home and it?s possessions to the full extent. Do not be afraid to ask questions, express concerns, or criticize rates and limits. This is your home, life, and family you?re dealing with so it?s okay to be a little pushy to make sure you?re getting what you want when you pay for it.

4. Ask About Rate Increases
No one wants to think about their rates increasing in the future when they?re first taking on a new bill, but it is important to remember that your flood insurance rates could very likely rise and you will be expected to pay the difference. Luckily, now that you know this you can take a look at rate limits for each insurance company you consider, and factor them in.

5. Preparation is Key
The more knowledgeable and prepared you are when choosing flood insurance, the more likely you are to make the perfect choice for you. Before going in to question agents, make a list of things you?d like to ask and know. It?s easy to get flustered and forget important things when you?re talking to a smooth talking insurance agent who knows how to make a sale. Know what exactly you?d like protected from a potential flood (just the home, or all possessions or vehicles as well?) and what your budget is. Look online before going out to et a good idea for insurance rates for your area.

6. Ask Neighbors
Don?t be shy to ask neighbors and friends living nearby if they have flood insurance and which company they purchased it from. Make sure to ask multiple questions from overall satisfaction, to reliability and rates. The best reviews are from the customers themselves as opposed to the company trying to sell their stuff.

7. Do Not Rely on Handouts
Although it?s true people living in high-risk areas have the right to government aid in a natural disaster, they aid is very limited. Very limited. If you live in one of theses areas and thus think you don?t need insurance, know that you?ll receive some help but you may lose your home and possessions in the process, as the government is not likely to replace them.

Sheridan takes stand in 'Housewives' trial

Toby Canham / Getty Images

Nicollette Sheridan arrives in court before taking the stand for opening arguments in her "Desperate Housewives" lawsuit at County Courthouse on Thursday, March 1 in Los Angeles. Toby Canham/Getty Images

By Alex Ben Block, The Hollywood Reporter

Former "Desperate Housewives" actress Nicollette Sheridan has taken the witness stand in the trial over her claim that she was fired by ABC after complaining about being hit by series creator Marc Cherry.

"That was embarrassing," Sheridan said in Los Angeles Superior Court after a jury had been shown a montage of clips of her sexiest scenes from the hit ABC dramedy.

After describing her character as "sexy, overt, audacious," she looked at the jury of eight women and four men and began her testimony by describing her original audition for a guest role and how she became a regular. She said after season one, producers doubled her salary and gave her a $125,000 bonus.

PHOTOS: TV's Priciest Primetime Shows for Advertisers

Sheridan continued testifying that she received raises in a new contract (in the third year she got $125,000 per episode and in the fourth year she would get $150,000, then $175,000 in fifth year and $200,000 for the sixth year and $250,000 for seventh episode). At end of season three, Cherry allegedly told Sheridan that the show would end with Sheridan's character hanging in a noose but that she would "definitely" be back, and she was.

Sheridan?s testimony is continuing Thursday (THR will provide updates).

Her appearance marked the beginning of testimony in the trial, which is expected to last about two weeks. At the heart of the case is Sheridan?s contention that she was wrongly terminated from the ABC series by producer-writer Marc Cherry after she complained that he had lost his temper and hit her on the side of the head.

In opening arguments on Wednesday, Sheridan?s attorney Mark Baute said that Cherry had smacked his client on the side of the head ?hard.? Cherry's lawyer Adam Levin described the incident in his opening statement as ?a light tap on the head," which was simply meant to demonstrate "a piece of physical humor" from the scene.

Jurors will be asked to determine if Cherry committed battery on Sept. 24, 2008, during that rehearsal and whether his decision to terminate her from the show several months and 11 episodes later was retaliation for her complaints against him.

VIDEO: Emmy Roundtable: Comedy Actresses

Much of the case will hang on whether Cherry in fact decided in May 2008 that Sheridan?s character was to die. That was four months before he struck Sheridan. ABC is a defendant in the suit because it approved Cherry?s plan to kill off the character at the end of the season.

Two of the show?s former writers are expected to testify for Sheridan that they never heard Cherry say he would kill off the character in advance of the incident. Another network executive will testify that it is unusual to kill off a lead character like the one Sheridan played.

Cherry?s side will say that Sheridan?s character was originally only supposed to be in the pilot episode, but they later decided to make her a "blond bombshell who would have sex with the husbands of all of the housewives." Cherry will say that after five seasons, according to his lawyer, the "writers could only do so much with the character," because there were only so many husbands for her to sleep with.

Sheridan?s lawyer will point out that the network and producers picked up Sheridan's option for a new season, guaranteeing her $4 million for the year, only two weeks after they claim they decided to eliminate her character from the show.

Among those expected to testify on Cherry?s behalf are Sheridan's fellow actors Eva Longoria, Marcia Cross, James Denton, Felicity Huffman and Neal McDonough, among others.

As part of ABC's case, jurors will be shown an index card created at a writer's meeting in May 2008 that reads "Steve drinks OJ," which was code for the plan to have Sheridan's husband cause her death. Levin said it was a reference to O.J. Simpson.

In earlier rulings, the judge limited how much Sheridan can win to a little more than $4 million, which represents her salary for one season. She had been seeking millions more to cover all the seasons she would have been on the show if she remained.
