Health News - Powerful Television Ads Encourage New York ...

Stories illustrate tragic consequences of smoking; support message of World No Tobacco Day on May 31

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is airing a series of television ads that feature real people living with the effects of smoking-related diseases. The ads urge smokers to contact their doctors for assistance with quitting. More than 25,000 New Yorkers die each year from smoking-related diseases.

?These ads are sobering, but they save lives,? said Scott McIntosh, Ph.D., director of Greater Rochester Area Tobacco Cessation Center (GRATCC) and associate professor, Department of Public Health Sciences, James P. Wilmot Cancer Center. ?We need ads like this to counter the roughly $1 million a day spent in New York State by the tobacco industry to encourage smoking, which can weaken the resolve of those trying to quit and encourage the next generation to start smoking.?

The messages in the ads are emotional and describe life-changing illnesses and disabilities including cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart disease, amputation and complications from diabetes.

Smokers and non-smokers exposed to second-hand smoke share their stories in the ads, including the following:

?

  • Tiffany smoked cigarettes, even though her mother, a smoker, died of lung cancer. Tiffany finally quit smoking in 2012 when her daughter turned 16 years old, the same age that she was when her mother died.

  • Bill, a 40-year old diabetic, learned that smoking makes diabetes harder to control as he experienced blindness in one eye, suffered kidney failure and had one leg amputated.

  • Michael, a grandfather with COPD, struggled to tell his grandson he is dying.

?From doctors to pharmacists, from physician assistants to nurses, all health care providers need to play a critical role in helping tobacco users to quit,? said
Thomas McInerny, M.D., professor of Pediatrics, the University of Rochester Medical Center, and president of the American Academy of Pediatrics. The Academy, along with the American Medical Association, American Academy of Family Physicians, American College of Physicians, and the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, have partnered with the CDC on the ?Talk With Your Doctor? initiative, calling for their members to ask the right questions about tobacco and secondhand smoke when seeing patients and their parents.

According to the CDC, last year?s national campaign with similar ads, greatly increased calls to quitlines around the country, demonstrating that people are trying to quit smoking after they see the ads.

The ads are funded by the Affordable Care Act?s Prevention and Public Health Fund and are running across the country on television, radio, billboards, online, and in theaters, magazines and newspapers.

The campaign reinforces the message that is spread through World No Tobacco Day on May 31?an annual event that draws attention to the tobacco epidemic and encourages smokers to quit. In recognition of these two campaigns, the GRATCC will feature tobacco control efforts from around the world on Facebook and Twitter.

For more information on the ads, including profiles of the former smokers featured in the ads, visit www.cdc.gov/tips.

For help quitting smoking, speak with your doctor or contact the New York State Smokers? Quitline at 1-866-NY-QUITS (1-866-697-8487) or www.nysmokefree.com.

Lessons from a diagnosis of skin cancer - KevinMD.com

Lessons from a diagnosis of skin cancerI have been diagnosed with skin cancer.

There really isn?t much special about that, since it is a distinction I share with over 2 million Americans who have a skin cancer removed every year. Fortunately, for most, it is a cancer that is not of particular concern since most can be removed. But even those ?simple? surgeries?as I have learned from my own experience?can be a bit problematic.

Occasionally it helps to find some humor in difficult situations, and this is one of those times. And since I am generally pretty open about what goes on in my aging body?in an effort to help others understand that they are not alone on some of these issues?I have to hold myself out as an example of what NOT to do when it comes to taking care of yourself.

You see, I am supposed to know this stuff about skin cancer. I know the risks, I know how to prevent it, I know what it looks like, and I know what we are supposed to do when we see a suspicious lesion. Not only do I know these things, I talk and write about them frequently. I am supposed to have a certain level of expertise about skin cancer. In fact, this very month if you happen to be in a doctor?s office and they have a closed circuit program from CNN?s Accent Health, you will see my smiling face telling you what you need to know about skin cancer.

And if you look closely at my chin in that segment, you will see the little nodule on the left hand side that I chose to ignore?until some friends of mine would not let me ignore it any longer.

This little bugger showed up about a year ago, and I thought it was related to an inflammatory skin condition that I had developed about the same time (which interestingly resolved the minute the darn thing was removed. Don?t ask me why, I just know it happened). It got larger and smaller, and if I shaved over it, it bled.

So let?s see: a new lesion that didn?t go away despite my best efforts. Something that continued to get irritated and would bleed. Maybe even getting a little larger over time. Looked just like the pictures they show you as a doctor, which suggests a basal cell carcinoma. So, Dr. Len, what was your first clue?

Maybe I was just a bit too busy. Maybe I had seen enough of doctors and hospitals over the past year. Maybe my problems with wound healing from my prior surgeries gave me pause. Maybe one of my wonderful colleagues had written a paper that skin cancers were less common in people who took the same type of blood pressure medicine that I take. Maybe, maybe, maybe?

Fortunately, I have friends who know a thing or two about skin cancer. And as luck would have it, I was at a meeting a couple of weeks ago that was also attended by some of them; dermatologists and experts in removing skin cancer with Moh?s surgery. While I sat at a committee table deliberating what I thought were some important issues at this meeting, I got a tap on the shoulder from one of those friends, who motioned me outside. I was greeted by a group of five dermatologists who pointed and wagged their fingers at me and said, essentially, that the thing had to come off. In short, I had become the focus of their intervention.

Of course I told them I would get it taken care of. But they are my friends, and they know me. So they took it upon themselves to contact one of their colleagues who called me that Monday evening and had me in her operating chair the next morning. And off it came: a nice sized basal cell with a hole in my chin that was artfully sewn up.

So there I was, Mr. Dr. Expert, with a big bandage on my face. But the cancer was gone, the margins were clean (that?s one of the advantages of Moh?s surgery: you know on the spot with frozen sections if they get all of the cancer removed). I did have some minor issues with the incision later in the week, but those got taken care of. The stitches are out, the scar will heal/shrink, and my face looks the same as it always did?well, no worse anyway.

And the real irony of all this? One week later I was standing in the halls of Congress in Washington with some of those very same colleagues welcoming members of Congress and their staffs to a presentation on the importance of?you guessed it?finding skin cancer early and sun safe behavior! There I was, with a nice fat bandage on my face. You can?t dream some of this up.

Like many of you, I always try to understand what happens to me when it comes to my health?or perhaps I should say ?unhealth.? But there was no secret here: I grew up in an era where sunscreen just didn?t exist. And as a young man I worked summers as a swimming teacher/lifeguard at a camp, where the goal was to get burned early and as tan as possible to ?protect? myself from the sun. Word to the wise: that?s a myth.

This is not to say that I don?t take safe sun behaviors seriously now?as I have for a number of decades. I use sunscreen regularly, wear a wide brimmed hat, and seek the shade when at the beach or some other sunny place. I certainly don?t burn and I don?t tan either (I can?t imagine what would happen if I came back to work from vacation and had a sunburn. Probably the same thing that would happen if I was found smoking a cigar!). But the damage had been done a long time ago, when I was young?and that?s a message all of us should heed, kids, teens, and parents alike.

So I will take my experience and hopefully be the better and the healthier for it. I will continue to educate and cajole about being safe in the sun.

Listen to the warnings, be safe in the sun, and get your health professional to examine any suspicious lesions?especially those that change. You don?t want to follow in my footsteps on this one, my friends. You can easily be smarter than me when it comes to taking care of yourself and your skin. My lessons come with a new vigor, a new commitment?and a new scar to show for it.

Xbox One will have a slot-loading Blu-ray drive to go with its 500GB HDD

Microsoft confirms Xbox will have Bluray drive

Microsoft has confirmed what many saw as inevitable: the Xbox will have a Blu-ray drive. The company just announced the victor in the drive wars will be installed as a slot-loading front unit in each new Xbox One to provide entertainment and gaming input along with a 500GB HDD, a 360-degree switch from Redmond's last console, as it were. Microsoft heavily resisted the move to Blu-ray in the Xbox 360, but has caved to the inevitable, no doubt having come to an agreement with Sony, the owner of the tech, through gritted teeth.

Owner: Chinese boat's captain beaten by NKoreans

BEIJING (AP) ? Gunmen wearing North Korean military uniforms beat up the captain of a seized Chinese fishing boat and stole its fuel during two weeks of captivity, but eventually released the boat and crew Tuesday without the ransom they had demanded, the boat owner said.

The incident was the latest irritant in relations between North Korea and a Chinese government increasingly frustrated with its neighboring ally over tests of its nuclear and rocket technologies in defiance of U.N. bans.

Owner Yu Xuejun, who wasn't aboard the boat that was seized May 5 in what he says were Chinese waters, said in an interview that the men were allowed to move around the boat while they were held captive, but they were locked in a room at night. He said the captain suffered an arm injury when he was beaten, but he has since recovered.

After Yu publicized the boat's capture over the weekend, China had demanded that North Korea release the men, though Chinese officials have not said whether they believe the armed captors were operating on their own or under North Korean government authority. One of China's North Korea watchers said border guards were the likely culprits.

No ransom was paid, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said at a news briefing.

Yu reported the seizure to Chinese authorities, and later began writing about it in his microblog as a deadline for a 600,000 yuan ($100,000) ransom drew near.

His pleas for help and fears that his crew might be mistreated were forwarded thousands of times on the Internet, and a high-ranking Chinese military officer, Maj. Gen. Luo Yuan, wrote on the Twitter-like Sina Weibo of his fury over the detention.

"North Korea has gone too far! Even if you are short of money, you can't grab people across the border and blackmail," wrote Luo, who has more than 300,000 followers.

A similar abduction a year ago of Chinese fishermen by armed North Koreans caused an uproar in China when they were released. Those fishermen said they had been starved and beaten, and some had been stripped of everything but their underwear.

Hong, the Foreign Ministry spokesman, had declined to answer a question Monday about who exactly China believed was behind the boat seizure, but he made clear that Beijing was looking for the North Korean government to secure the release of the boat and crew.

An expert on North Korea at the Liaoning Academy of Social Sciences in northeast China said he doubted the North Korean government would have had any knowledge of the incident when it happened.

"This incident is purely about a lawless act by the North Korean border police to blackmail our fishermen," said Lu Chao, adding that such things frequently happen to Chinese fishermen working near border waters.

"Sometimes, if the amount they are asking for isn't too high, the boat owner would just pay it," he said. This time, it might be related to spring food shortages, "so they are asking for a huge ransom."

(AP) ? Helmeted rescue workers raced Tuesday to complete the search for survivors and the dead in the Oklahoma City suburb where a mammoth tornado destroyed countless homes, cleared lots down to bare red earth and claimed 24 lives.

Scientists concluded the storm was a rare and extraordinarily powerful type of twister known as an EF5, which is capable of lifting reinforced buildings off the ground, hurling cars like missiles and stripping trees completely free of bark.

Meanwhile, residents of Moore began returning to their homes a day after the tornado smashed some neighborhoods into jagged wood scraps and gnarled pieces of metal. In place of their houses, many families found only empty lots.

The fire chief said he was confident there are no more bodies or survivors in the rubble.

"I'm 98 percent sure we're good," Gary Bird said Tuesday at a news conference with the governor, who had just completed an aerial tour of the disaster zone.

Authorities were so focused on the search effort that they had yet to establish the full scope of damage along the storm's long, ruinous path.

The death toll was revised downward from 51 after the state medical examiner said some victims may have been counted twice in the confusion.

By Tuesday afternoon, every damaged home had been searched at least once, Bird said. His goal was to conduct three searches of each building just to be certain there were no more bodies or survivors.

The fire chief was hopeful that could be completed before nightfall but efforts were being hampered by heavy rain. Crews also continued a brick-by-brick search of the rubble of a school that was blown apart with many children inside.

No additional survivors or bodies have been found since Monday night, Bird said.

Survivors emerged with harrowing accounts of the storm's wrath, which many endured as they shielded loved ones.

Chelsie McCumber grabbed her 2-year-old son, Ethan, wrapped him in jackets and covered him with a mattress before they squeezed into a coat closet of their house. McCumber sang to her child when he complained it was getting hot inside the small space.

"I told him we're going to play tent in the closet," she said, beginning to cry.

"I just felt air so I knew the roof was gone," she said Tuesday, standing under the sky where her roof should have been. The home was littered with wet gray insulation and all of their belongings.

"Time just kind of stood still" in the closet, she recalled. "I was kind of holding my breath thinking this isn't the worst of it. I didn't think that was it. I kept waiting for it to get worse."

"When I got out, it was worse than I thought," she said.

Gov. Mary Fallin lamented the loss of life, especially of the nine children killed, but she celebrated the town's resilience.

"We will rebuild, and we will regain our strength," Fallin said.

In describing the bird's-eye view of the damage, the governor said many houses were "taken away," leaving "just sticks and bricks, basically. It's hard to tell if there was a structure there or not."

From the air, large stretches of town could been seen where every home had been cut to pieces. Some homes were sucked off their concrete slabs. A pond was filled with piles of wood and an overturned trailer.

Also visible were large patches of red earth where the tornado scoured the land down to the soil. Some tree trunks were still standing, but the winds ripped away their leaves, limbs and bark.

In revising its estimate of the storm's power, the National Weather Service said the tornado, which was on the ground for 40 minutes, was a top-of-the-scale EF5 twister with winds of at least 200 mph.

The agency upgraded the tornado from an EF4 on the enhanced Fujita scale based on reports from a damage-assessment team, said spokeswoman Keli Pirtle. Monday's twister was at least a half-mile wide, and it was the first EF5 tornado of 2013.

Other search-and-rescue teams focused their efforts at Plaza Towers Elementary, where the storm ripped off the roof, knocked down walls and destroyed the playground as students and teachers huddled in hallways and bathrooms.

Seven of the nine dead children were killed at the school, but several students were pulled alive from under a collapsed wall and other heaps of mangled debris. Rescue workers passed the survivors down a human chain of parents and neighborhood volunteers. Parents carried children in their arms to a triage center in the parking lot. Some students looked dazed, others terrified.

Plaza Towers and another school in Oklahoma City that was not as severely damaged did not have reinforced storm shelters, or safe rooms, said Albert Ashwood is director of the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management.

More than 100 schools across the state do have safe rooms, he said, adding that it's up to each jurisdiction to set priorities for which schools get limited funding for safe rooms.

Ashwood said a shelter would not necessarily have saved more lives at Plaza Towers.

"When you talk about any kind of safety measures ... it's a mitigating measure, it's not an absolute," he told reporters. "There's not a guarantee that everyone will be totally safe."

Officials were still trying to account for a handful of children not found at the school who may have gone home early with their parents, Bird said Tuesday.

Evidence of the storm's fury stretched in every direction: Roofs were torn off houses, exposing metal rods left twisted like pretzels. Cars sat in heaps, crumpled and sprayed with caked-on mud. Insulation and siding was piled up against any walls still standing. Yards were littered with pieces of wood, nails and pieces of electric poles.

President Barack Obama pledged to provide federal help and mourned the death of young children who were killed while "trying to take shelter in the safest place they knew ? their school."

The town of Moore "needs to get everything it needs right away," he said Tuesday.

Moore has been one of the fastest-growing suburbs of Oklahoma City, attracting middle-income families and young couples looking for stable schools and affordable housing. The town's population has grown over the last decade as developers built subdivisions for people who wanted to avoid the urban problems and schools of Oklahoma City but couldn't afford pricier college-town Norman next door.

Many residents commute to jobs in Oklahoma City or to Tinker Air Force Base, which is about 20 minutes away.

The event will honor former Florida State football coach Bobby Bowden, former Connecticut basketball coach/cancer survivor Jim Calhoun, and Kansas basketball coach Bill Self.

The gala raises money for the V Foundation in honor of the late Jim Valvano. Net proceeds go to pediatric cancer research.

"It should be really, really special," Vitale said in a phone interview Thursday. "It has gone way beyond my dreams."

More than 70 sports celebrities are scheduled to attend, including Florida coach Billy Donovan, Indiana coach Tom Crean, Kentucky coach John Calipari, Michigan State coach Tom Izzo, Miami coach Jim Larranaga, Villanova coach Jay Wright and Florida State coaches Jimbo Fisher (football) and Leonard Hamilton (basketball). The guest list also includes former major leaguer Gary Sheffield, former NFL running back Ricky Watters and 2000 Heisman Trophy winner Chris Weinke.

Vitale has a few special guests planned, too.

He will have Michigan State junior forward Adreian Payne and his friend, 7-year-old Lacey Holsworth, in attendance. Holsworth has cancer and is scheduled to have a bone-marrow transplant soon. She has become close with Payne over the past year and met Vitale before the Indiana-Michigan State game in February.

"She just got clearance to join us," Vitale said. "I guarantee there won't be a dry eye in the place."

Vitale also is flying in the parents of Justin Miller, who died April 3, less than three weeks shy of his 21st birthday and after a five-year battle with epithelioid sarcoma. Miller continued playing the drums even after having his dominant arm amputated in 2011.

Vitale will present Miller's parents with a grant in Justin's name for $250,000.

"Nothing pleases me more now," Vitale said. "I'm selfish. I have five grandchildren. I'm about to go watch the kids play tennis. That's what every kid should be doing. Instead, we have so many doing chemo and radiation. It's just not fair."

In total, Vitale will have 11 families of cancer survivors, including eight of the survivors, on hand at the Ritz-Carlton.

Everyone there should witness a record-breaking night for the event, topping the $1.8 million raised last year and reaching the $10 million milestone over eight years.

"People have been great to me," Vitale said. "I've got goose-bumps thinking about it."

Why do planets farthest from sun have highest winds? Team closes in on answer

The planets beyond Mars exhibit the highest winds speeds of any other planets in the solar system. It's a puzzle, because less energy from the sun is available there to drive higher winds.?

By Pete Spotts,?Staff writer / May 17, 2013

This image of Neptune was taken during the August 16-17, 1989, period as Voyager 2 photographed the planet almost continuously, but had no way to measure the winds or how deep they reach into the atmosphere. Now, scientists have turned to subtle changes in the planet's gravity for clues.

Astronomers have long marveled that the fastest wind speeds in the solar system have been clocked on the planets farthest from the sun.

Now, they may be a step closer to figuring out the energy source that drives these mighty winds.

In a new study, a team of scientists from Israel and the US finds that on Uranus and Neptune the winds appear to be confined to the top 680 miles of the atmosphere ? and may actually involve a thinner layer than that.

The results not only reveal new information about Uranus and Neptune, the researchers say. They also provide insights into the mechanisms driving the atmospheres of planets orbiting other stars, says William Hubbard, a researcher at the University of Arizona's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory and a member of the team reporting the results in Thursday's issue of the journal Nature.

Up to now, researchers have posited two possible sources: processes confined to the top layer of the atmosphere or heat welling up from deep in the planets' interiors. Both planets emit more heat than they receive from the sun, with Neptune radiating twice as much. And while 680 miles of atmosphere seems towering by Earthly standards, it's only skin deep for Uranus and Neptune.

The winds in the planets' wide equatorial jet streams rip along at speeds of up to 450 miles an hour on Uranus and as high as 1,300 miles an hour on more-distant Neptune. Still, the flows "seem to be rather shallow, so the amount of energy that has to be supplied to keep them going is much less than might have been thought," Dr. Hubbard says.

The planets beyond Mars exhibit the highest winds speeds of any other planets in the solar system. Yet from Jupiter on out, wind speeds increase with distance, even though less energy is available from the sun to drive atmospheric circulation at each orbit along the way.

The reasons for this trend "are not well understood, actually," says Adam Showman, also with the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory and a member of the study's team. But the prime suspect is atmospheric drag, or rather, the lack of it.

The outer planets' atmospheres behave more like liquids deep in their interiors, so there is virtually no surface roughness to act as a drag on winds, as there is on Earth. And as the distance between a planet and the sun increases, there is less solar energy to impart turbulence to the atmosphere, which also acts as a drag.

U.S. sought to recruit spies despite warning, Russia says

By Steve Gutterman

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia warned the United States in 2011 to stop trying to recruit its security agents as spies and expelled a CIA operative in January this year after Washington ignored the warning, the Federal Security Service (FSB) said on Thursday.

Russia kept the expulsion in January quiet but went public this week when it detained Ryan Fogle, a U.S. diplomat it says was a spy, because it was fed up with the United States ignoring its concerns, FSB spokesman Nikolai Zakharov said.

"The CIA crossed a red line and we were forced to react," Zakharov said in a written response to questions from Reuters.

In the biggest spy scandal between the former Cold War foes in three years, the FSB said on Tuesday that Fogle had been caught red-handed trying to recruit a Russian security officer as a CIA agent. He was ordered to leave Russia.

The FSB played up the capture, providing television stations with footage of the American being detained in a blond wig and pinned to the ground, as well as pictures of disguises, a wad of cash and a letter offering a target up to 1 million euro a year.

It could hardly have come at a worse time, days after Russia and the United States announced plans to organize an international conference to seek an end to Syria's civil war and cooperate more on counterterrorism after the Boston bombings.

Senior Russian and U.S. officials have signaled they do not want the scandal to scuttle attempts to improve strained ties, but by publicizing it Moscow has tried to make the point that it is the United States that risks torpedoing those efforts.

"PROVOCATIVE"

In October 2011, the FSB officially warned the CIA station chief in Moscow "that if provocative recruitment efforts aimed at Russian security service employees continued, the FSB would take 'mirror' measures," Zakharov said.

He said the FSB had named Russian officers who had been targeted and the CIA operatives who had approached them, adding that the U.S. director of national intelligence, James Clapper, had been "made aware of this issue".

"The CIA did not take our concern over the situation into account" and continued its recruitment efforts, he said.

He said that last December, an American diplomat - like Fogle, a third secretary at the U.S. embassy in Moscow - had been caught trying to recruit a Russian agent, and had left the country on January 15 after being declared persona non grata.

He identified the American as Benjamin Dillon. Both Fogle and Dillon are listed as third secretaries at the U.S. embassy in the autumn-winter 2012-13 edition of a directory of foreign diplomatic, media and business offices in Moscow.

The U.S. embassy declined to comment on whether an employee was expelled in January. The FSB said it had information indicating Fogle worked for the CIA when he arrived in Russia in April 2011.

"In the hope that the CIA leadership would draw the necessary conclusions, we did not make this case public. But apparently the adherence by the FSB to the principles of professional ethics were not properly appreciated."

The FSB response to the query from Reuters confirmed and elaborated on statements made by a man shown in silhouette on Russian television and identified as an FSB employee.

Sprint closes deal to buy spectrum and customers from U.S. Cellular in the Midwest

Sprint

PCS spectrum and 420,000 U.S. Cellular customers part of deal

Sprint has announced that it's closed a deal to purchase PCS spectrum and a large number of customers from U.S. Cellular in the Midwest. As part of the deal, Sprint gets its hands on 20MHz of PCS airwaves in " various Midwest markets including Chicago, South Bend, Ind., and Champaign, Ill.," and 10MHz in St. Louis. As part of the transaction, Sprint will also inherit around 420,000 U.S. Cellular customers.

The customers affected by the purchase have already been informed, Sprint says, and it aims to offer them a smooth transition to its own network or one of its pre-paid brands, on a "similar or better" device at "little or no cost." The additional spectrum will help Sprint boost its network in these areas, as it looks to expand its 4G LTE coverage.

Asteroid 1998 QE2 to sail past Earth is nine times larger than cruise ship

May 16, 2013 ? On May 31, 2013, asteroid 1998 QE2 will sail serenely past Earth, getting no closer than about 3.6 million miles (5.8 million kilometers), or about 15 times the distance between Earth and the moon. And while QE2 is not of much interest to those astronomers and scientists on the lookout for hazardous asteroids, it is of interest to those who dabble in radar astronomy and have a 230-foot (70-meter) -- or larger -- radar telescope at their disposal.

"Asteroid 1998 QE2 will be an outstanding radar imaging target at Goldstone and Arecibo and we expect to obtain a series of high-resolution images that could reveal a wealth of surface features," said radar astronomer Lance Benner, the principal investigator for the Goldstone radar observations from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. "Whenever an asteroid approaches this closely, it provides an important scientific opportunity to study it in detail to understand its size, shape, rotation, surface features, and what they can tell us about its origin. We will also use new radar measurements of the asteroid's distance and velocity to improve our calculation of its orbit and compute its motion farther into the future than we could otherwise."

The closest approach of the asteroid occurs on May 31 at 1:59 p.m. Pacific (4:59 p.m. Eastern / 20:59 UTC). This is the closest approach the asteroid will make to Earth for at least the next two centuries. Asteroid 1998 QE2 was discovered on Aug. 19, 1998, by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Lincoln Near Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR) program near Socorro, New Mexico.

The asteroid, which is believed to be about 1.7 miles (2.7 kilometers) or nine Queen Elizabeth 2 ship-lengths in size, is not named after that 12-decked, transatlantic-crossing flagship for the Cunard Line. Instead, the name is assigned by the NASA-supported Minor Planet Center in Cambridge, Mass., which gives each newly discovered asteroid a provisional designation starting with the year of first detection, along with an alphanumeric code indicating the half-month it was discovered, and the sequence within that half-month.

Radar images from the Goldstone antenna could resolve features on the asteroid as small as 12 feet (3.75 meters) across, even from 4 million miles away.

"It is tremendously exciting to see detailed images of this asteroid for the first time," said Benner. "With radar we can transform an object from a point of light into a small world with its own unique set of characteristics. In a real sense, radar imaging of near-Earth asteroids is a fundamental form of exploring a whole class of solar system objects."

Asteroids, which are always exposed to the sun, can be shaped like almost anything under it. Those previously imaged by radar and spacecraft have looked like dog bones, bowling pins, spheroids, diamonds, muffins, and potatoes. To find out what 1998 QE2 looks like, stay tuned. Between May 30 and June 9, radar astronomers using NASA's 230-foot-wide (70 meter) Deep Space Network antenna at Goldstone, Calif., and the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico, are planning an extensive campaign of observations. The two telescopes have complementary imaging capabilities that will enable astronomers to learn as much as possible about the asteroid during its brief visit near Earth.

NASA places a high priority on tracking asteroids and protecting our home planet from them. In fact, the U.S. has the most robust and productive survey and detection program for discovering near-Earth objects. To date, U.S. assets have discovered over 98 percent of the known NEOs.

In 2012, the NEO budget was increased from $6 million to $20 million. Literally dozens of people are involved with some aspect of near-Earth object (NEO) research across NASA and its centers. Moreover, there are many more people involved in researching and understanding the nature of asteroids and comets, including those that come close to Earth, plus those who are trying to find and track them in the first place.

In addition to the resources NASA puts into understanding asteroids, it also partners with other U.S. government agencies, university-based astronomers, and space science institutes across the country that are working to track and better understand these objects, often with grants, interagency transfers and other contracts from NASA.

NASA's Near-Earth Object Program at NASA Headquarters, Washington, manages and funds the search, study, and monitoring of asteroids and comets whose orbits periodically bring them close to Earth. JPL manages the Near-Earth Object Program Office for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. JPL is a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.

In 2016, NASA will launch a robotic probe to one of the most potentially hazardous of the known NEOs. The OSIRIS-REx mission to asteroid (101955) Bennu will be a pathfinder for future spacecraft designed to perform reconnaissance on any newly-discovered threatening objects. Aside from monitoring potential threats, the study of asteroids and comets enables a valuable opportunity to learn more about the origins of our solar system, the source of water on Earth, and even the origin of organic molecules that lead to the development of life.

NASA recently announced developing a first-ever mission to identify, capture and relocate an asteroid for human exploration. Using game-changing technologies advanced by the Administration, this mission would mark an unprecedented technological achievement that raises the bar of what humans can do in space. Capturing and redirecting an asteroid will integrate the best of NASA's science, technology and human exploration capabilities and draw on the innovation of America's brightest scientists and engineers.

Recommendation of the EPUB3 standard / Study by researchers from Mainz University handed over to Neelie Kroes, EU Commissioner for the Digital Agenda

There are no technical or functional reasons for Amazon and Apple to fence off their e-book worlds using proprietary e-book formats. This is the result of a research study conducted by Professor Dr. Christoph Blsi and Professor Dr. Franz Rothlauf of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) and handed over today to Neelie Kroes, EU Commissioner for the Digital Agenda, in Brussels. The researchers emphasize the fact that the format standard proposal EPUB3 supports all features needed for multimedia and interactive e-books. Amazon and Apple, however, use other formats that are incompatible with that of most independent retailers and are thus limiting users to the products of their respective e-book stores.

In their study, commissioned by the European and International Booksellers Federation (EIBF), Professor Dr. Christoph Blsi of the JGU Institute of Book Studies and Professor Dr. Franz Rothlauf of the Gutenberg School of Management and Economics also discuss the fact that the industry-wide use of the EPUB3 standard alone would not guarantee the complete interoperability of e-books for consumers. The digital rights management measures of the different publishing worlds would have to be synchronized. The study holds that this would be feasible, given the corresponding will of the parties concerned.

The 48 page study on the current interoperability of e-book formats has today been handed over to Neelie Kroes, EU Commissioner for the Digital Agenda. It is to contribute to the creation of a barrier-free market for e-books. In the afternoon, Christoph Blsi and Franz Rothlauf officially presented their study in Brussels and discussed it in a round-table talk with experts in the field.

Lego Mindstorms EV3 intros three new models, ready for summer tour (video)

DNP Lego Mindstorms EV3 introduces three new bonus models video

When Lego introduced the Mindstorms EV3 earlier this year, it bundled building instructions for five "hero" models, several of which can be seen in our CES hands-on. The complex kit of sensors, modules and bricks can do a lot more than that of course, and Lego community members have come up with twelve more, three of which were unveiled today: a dinosaur, a guitar and a whack-a-mole-style arcade game. The latter two in particular represent attempts at more whimsical implementations as well as the usual ambling robot. Lego plans to reveal the rest of the bonus models later this year.

As part of the announcement, these contraptions and more will be part of a summer cross-country tour called SparkTruck, where Lego will join up with Stanford's d.school Institute of Design to teach children how to start prototyping. What with the EV3 educational platform set to land in schools this August, Lego's timing is certainly spot on. After the break, have a peek at the fully-built creations that kids can look forward to, along with a video demo.

Asus MeMO Pad ME172V

As tablet makers race to the bottom, sacrifices have to be made to reach those bargain prices. Luckily for consumers, there are a number of budget friendly tablets that, while not hot rods, are perfectly suitable for activities like watching videos, reading books, and surfing the Web. The Asus MeMO Pad ME172V ($149.99 list) is one of those tablets, serving as a lite version of the Editors' Choice Nexus 7, for the less demanding tablet user that's looking to save a few bucks. If you want to play all the latest high-end games, this tablet is not for you, but if you're considering the Amazon Kindle Fire?and prefer a more traditional Android experience, the MeMO Pad is a solid alternative.

Design and Features
The MeMO Pad looks and feels a lot like the Nexus 7, which is also made by Asus, and has nearly identical dimensions and weight at 7.7 by 4.7 by 0.45 inches (HWD) and 13.1 ounces. It even has a similar textured back, but the plastic here doesn't have the same rubberized soft-touch coating. There are Volume and Power buttons along the left edge, a 3.5mm headphone jack on the top panel, and a micro USB port and microSD card slot along the bottom. There's no card slot in the Nexus 7, and is a big selling point for many, since expanding storage via microSD is more affordable. Around back is a single speaker port that doesn't get very loud. The MeMO Pad is available in black, white, or pink.?

Physically speaking, one of the biggest differences between the Nexus 7 and the MeMO Pad is the display. Here you get a lower-resolution 7-inch 1,024-by-600-pixel screen that's more in line with the standard Kindle Fire?than the Nexus 7 or Kindle Fire HD, both of which use 1,280-by-800-pixel IPS displays. Resolution isn't the only difference, as the MeMO Pad's display also suffers from color and brightness degradation when viewed from an angle. When held in portrait orientation, viewing angle isn't bad from left to right, but viewing off angle from above or below looks pretty bad.

A Wi-Fi only tablet, the MeMO pad connects to 802.11b/g/n networks on the 2.4GHz frequency only. There's no Bluetooth and only a single front-facing 1-megapixel camera for video chat. The tablet comes with 16GB of internal storage for your $150, and our 32 and 64GB SanDisk microSD cards worked fine.

Performance and Android
The MeMO Pad is powered by a dual-core 1GHz VIA WM8950 processor with a Mali 400 GPU and 1GB RAM. For general purposes, like checking email, browsing the Web, and playing casual games, the MeMO Pad performs reasonably smoothly, and was stable during my tests. App load times were good, and switching between multiple running apps didn't cause any hang ups. Swiping through home pages was smooth, if not buttery, but you'll still notice a little choppiness when scrolling through Web pages. And don't expect gaming performance here; I experienced laggy movement and low frame rates in games like Riptide GP and Temple Run 2.

Asus made a number of modifications to Android 4.1.1 (Jelly Bean) on the MeMO Pad, including some cosmetic and functional changes. The most notable is the dedicated Floating Apps button that sits to the right of the standard Back, Home, and Recent Apps software buttons. It's a lot like Sony's Small Apps found on the Xperia Tablet S, and includes useful pop-up apps like your calendar, email, to-do list, and Web browser. These apps run in small windows on top of the current running app, and you can move and resize them as you see fit. They don't run completely smoothly?I noticed some Web page elements wouldn't render correctly in the floating browser?but for basic multitasking on an entry-level tablet, the MeMO Pad does pretty well.

There are a number of Asus branded apps, including WebStorage, a DropBox alternative, and its social media aggregator BuddyBuzz. You have access to the Google Play app store, which means more than 800,000 apps, most of which, with the exception of intensive games, will run fine on the MeMO Pad.

Media support is solid: For video, the MeMO pad can handle Xvid, MPEG4, H.264, DivX, and AVI files up to 1080p resolution. Audio support includes MP3, AAC, FLAC, OGG, and WAV, but not WMA files.

In our battery rundown test, which loops a video with screen brightness set to maximum and Wi-Fi switched on, the MeMO Pad lasted 4 hours, 17 minutes. That's well short of the Nexus 7's 10 hours, 37 minutes, and still less than the Kindle Fire's 5 hours, 11 minutes on the same test.

Conclusions
The Asus MeMO Pad ME172V isn't going to knock out any of the flagship small-screen tablets out there, but it's also not meant to. At $150 it's one of the most affordable Android options and it's from a reputable tablet maker. If that's still too expensive for you, Coby makes a serviceable 7-inch tablet for $120, the MID7065, but you'll get a low-quality display and even shorter battery life. The MeMO Pad isn't for gamers or power users, but it offers a solid experience for those interested in less demanding tasks like Web browsing or media consumption. For the Amazon-averse, it's a good inexpensive alternative if you don't want to spend $50 more on the Editors' Choice Nexus 7.
